Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You sparks fury as UK calls for ‘ban’

It’s bad news for Mariah Carey as some listeners are gearing up to “ban” her beloved Christmas jingle.

Mariah Carey, the undisputed Queen of Christmas, has been ruling the festive season with her hit song ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ since 1994. However, it’s now claimed over 1 in 10 UK residents are calling for the end of her mighty reign.

Her festive track is one of the most played songs during December which has earned her a whopping $2.5-3 million (£2-2.5m) in royalties each year. In fact, she landed her first Christmas number one 26 years after its release.

But it looks like people are getting over it after it finally made its way to number one. And now, new research reveals that 12% of people can’t stand it.

It might not just be Mariah too, because Christmas music overall isn’t the top choice for getting into the holiday spirit, according to a study by Greene King. They found that 28% of adults prefer spending time with family during the festive period, followed by decorating and visiting the pub.

As for festive traditions we could do without, nearly 20% would vote to ban Christmas jumpers, while 13% want to ditch Secret Santa. Other tired traditions include singing Christmas carols (7%) and Christmas-themed music (6%).

Despite this, pub visits during December are still at an all-time favourite, averaging four trips to catch up with friends and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Over a third (35%) believe the classic pub is the ideal place for Christmas celebrations, and almost a quarter (24%) view the pub as an essential part of their local community at Christmas.

Greene King is spreading Christmas cheer with a new giveaway, offering a grand prize of a £3,000 TUI holiday voucher and £2,000 cash. To enter, Brits simply need to share what gets them in the festive spirit on their website.

Andrew Gallagher from Greene King Pubs said: “As a nation we’re big on tradition, and it’s fantastic to see that despite the ongoing pressures, Brits still place the pub at the heart of the community.

He added: “It doesn’t matter if you’re dropping in with friends for a quick festive drink or planning a big Christmas meal with your family, we’ve got something for you.”
