A star of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City confessed she thanked God she was on her period on her wedding night – after marrying her own grandfather.
Mary Cosby promised her grandma that she would marry her husband after her death in 1997, in order to inherit his Pentecostal mega-church and the fortune associated with it. Her grandma wanted Mary, who was in her early 20s at the time, to “take her place” when she was gone.
Thankfully the pair aren’t related by blood, as Mary’s husband Robert Cosby Sr. is her step-grandfather, so it “isn’t incest”. But she was thankful nonetheless when she was able to put off consummating the marriage when they tied the knot more than 20 years ago.

Mary was 22 at the time, while her husband was 42. She confessed on the Bravo show: “Thank goodness I was on my period. And the period lasted about two weeks. He was like, ‘Are you still on?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m still on’.
“It got awkward so I stretched it out to the 28th day,” she admitted. Mary continued: “I had to get past that and I had to pray myself. I started to seek higher help myself. And it worked out so good, like it couldn’t have been better.”
Though the pair went on to welcome a biological son together, Mary has confessed they haven’t been intimate in a while. She told Andy Cohen the pair haven’t had sex in “the last few years” and don’t sleep in the same bed together.
She said: “We’re happy. You can’t say or do anything to take happiness away from me. It’s hard to get. If you can find that in a man, it doesn’t matter where he came from. Marriages are hard, they’re horrible, they can be a nightmare. I have a beautiful one.”
Mary cheekily added: “Like every single Chanel, he’s bought it for me. And I haven’t had to buy myself anything. All my designer things, Robert Sr. has gotten them for me.”
But she initially didn’t want to marry him, despite her grandmother leaving the wish in her will. She confessed to her co-star Heather Gay: “I did marry him. I didn’t want to, Heather. I didn’t want to. That’s weird to me. But [my grandma] really did want me to, so I obeyed her.”

Her evangelist gran, Rosemary Redmon Cosby, set up the arranged nuptials to ensure Robert was taken care of after her death, as there had been a significant age gap between them and she didn’t want him to have any regrets. Along with the marriage came the ownership of Rosemary’s assets – the family churches, restaurants and more.
