The Tourist star Jamie Dornan ‘lucky to be alive’ after run-in with caterpillar

Hollywood heart-throb Jamie Dornan was almost “killed” by poisonous toxic caterpillars on a lads trip, according to a pal.

We can reveal Dornan, 41, was rushed to hospital last year after a disastrous golfing weekend in Portugal. Friend Gordon Smart, a host on Radio 5Live, who was on the trip with pal Dornan said the star of the BBC hit The Tourist was “very lucky to come out of it alive”.

Smart had also been taken ill after suffering symptoms that he thought were a sign of a “heart attack”. He said: “We were having a great time, first day loads of golf, went out, loads of wine was drunk then we got onto espresso martinis.

“Then I started to feel tingling in my left hand, and then tingling in my left arm, which is a sign of a heart attack.”

Medics sent him to hospital and whilst there he saw Dornan being raced into the Emergency Room.

Smart, said: “As I was laying there Jamie went passed me on a hospital bed with doctors shouting the same questions to him, and I thought that’s not a good sign if he’s in the same state as me.’ It was a pretty scary time to be honest.’’

Smart says he caught up with Dornan when he returned back to their holiday home. He said: “I got out of hospital, and there’s Jamie Dornan with all this stuff attached to his chest saying: ‘Dear me Gordon, about 20 mins after you left my left arm went numb, left leg went numb, my right leg went numb and I found myself in the back of an ambulance.’’’

Smart, 42, explained the scare could have been caused by brushing up against hairy caterpillars on the golf course. He said Portuguese medics later contacted them to say dangerous processionary caterpillars had been suspected of killing people’s dogs in the area.

And that men in their forties’ had nearly died after having heart attacks playing golf nearby. He added: “Good news is it wasn’t a caffeine overdose, it wasn’t a hangover, it was a poisonous toxic caterpillar.’’

The scary toxic beasts resemble a ‘furry snake’ after swarming together. They can live in forested areas around golf courses and when threatened they defend themselves with hairs that contain irritant chemicals, which can cause severe rashes and allergic reactions. Some larvae will also eject hairs shaped like harpoons which can penetrate the skin causing inflammation and worse.

A relieved Dornan showed his gratitude to local paramedics who saved him, by having selfies with them after his terrifying ordeal was over.

He currently stars in The Tourist on BBC One, playing a crook who is wanted dead by drug gangs, but has lost his memory after a car crash. His biggest role to date is playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey films.
