EastEnders star didn’t mind lesbian romp but struggled with ‘gorgeous’ male co-star

Martine McCutcheon once revealed how she “wasn’t worried” about an on-screen lesbian romp – but confessed it was more “difficult” when it came to her male co-star.

The actress, 47, shot to fame as Tiffany Mitchell in the ‘90s on BBC soap EastEnders. Her career skyrocketed from there when she appeared on the hit Christmas classic Love Actually.

Martine played the role of sexy secretary Natalie who catches the eye of Prime Minister (Hugh Grant). And her performance went down so well that she even bagged an MTV Movie Award.

She also had a brief stint as a chart-topping pop star, releasing her debut platinum-selling album in 2000. The TV favourite has turned her hand to theatre too bagging a Laurence Oliver Award for her role as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.

But in 2005, Martine took on what appeared to be her raciest role – in the drama The English Harem. The movie follows a young woman, Tracy, played by Martine, who becomes one of three wives of West London Persian restaurateur, Sam (Art Malik).

And the film had a ton of sex scenes packed within its 2-hour run-time – including lesbian romps. Martine wasn’t phased by getting down and dirty on-screen with another woman, but apparently ‘thrusting’ against the hunk was tougher.

Speaking to The Mirror at the time she said: “There are quite a few intimate sex scenes which I’ve never done before. There are sex scenes with other ladies.

“I’m a straight woman so I wasn’t worried about there being any sexual chemistry. But with Art it was more difficult because he is absolutely gorgeous.”

Martine added: “I fancy a lot of men I meet in the industry but it’s true when people say there is nothing romantic about doing sex scenes.”

She went on: “I just wanted to giggle all the time – especially when the director was shouting ‘More thrusting!'”

In 2003, Martine starred in the classic Christmas film Love Actually, five years after she left her role as Tiffany in EastEnders. And it couldn’t have come at a better time, as the brunette beauty recently revealed she had actually been planning on leaving the showbiz world behind.

She told The Mirror in December 2022: “At that time, I’d decided to give up the business. I’d worked from the age of 17 playing Tiffany – it was a relentless schedule of 22 scenes a day, six days a week, alongside my pop career. There was a lot of pressure, a lot of touring and I battled with exhaustion and felt unwell.

“Then there was the press scrutiny. I had paparazzi running after me. I was only 23 and lived on my own – it was scary. I just thought, ‘I love what I do but I don’t love what comes with it’, so I called my agent and gave up the industry. I remember thinking, ‘If I’m meant to stay in it I’ll get a big sign.'”
