Today marks 30 years since the world lost the beloved Canadian comedian and actor, John Candy.
John was famous for his role in comedy hits like Uncle Buck, Splash, and Cool Runnings, as well as in the 1980s film The Blues Brothers. Sadly, John passed away on March 4, 1994, leaving behind a wife and children. He died suddenly while on a movie set in Durango, Mexico, filming what would be his last film, Wagons East.
Reports suggest that at the time of his death, John weighed an enormous 375lbs. On his last day, he reportedly spent long hours filming in very hot weather, wrapping up at 10pm, reports the Mirror US. After a long day, John had spaghetti for dinner and took a shower at 11pm. The next morning, his bodyguard entered John’s room after not getting a response from him over the phone.

The bodyguard found John unconscious, wearing a long red and black checked nightshirt. A doctor was called who confirmed that John had sadly died from a massive heart attack in his sleep. When he died, John was only 43 years old. The official cause of his death was noted as a heart attack, but a top forensic pathologist, Dr Michael Hunter, thinks there’s more to the story.
In a television series called ‘Autopsy: John Candy,’ Dr Hunter had a look at John’s post-mortem exam which showed that John was extremely overweight for most of his adult life. Speaking on the show, Dr Hunter revealed: “I’ve discovered that John was prone to binge eating in response to professional setbacks.”
He pointed out that John’s relationship with food was not healthy and even potentially deadly. The TV show also shone a light on another unhealthy habit smoking. One friend declared that by the time John was just 17 or 18, he would puff through “a pack a day”.
Dr Hunter ended up saying: “I think it’s probable that John’s addiction to smoking was a factor in his death. But John appears to have a history of use of another drug that is also known to have a damaging impact on the heart – and that’s cocaine.”
