Sydney Sweeney’s new project has been branded “extreme” by some audiences.
Immaculate premiered at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas on March 12 and the actress informed the audience: “Yes, we wanted you guys to all jump in your seats and be – hopefully – horrified sh**less, but you still care about the story.
The film’s director Michael Mohan also told Variety that the actress wanted her viewers to have an “extreme reaction” to the gory flick. He revealed: “I think this horror movie is a popcorn movie first and foremost. It’s a rollercoaster ride, but the ending is f***ing extreme. People are going to walk away having an extreme reaction to it and that’s all her. She wants to push the envelope but she wants to do it thoughtfully. I know she loves the movies and I’m proud of us for not pulling our punches.”

He continued on to praise the Euphoria actress’ idea: “We just wanted to have the jump scares that audiences have come to love, we wanted to balance out all that disturbing stuff with something that felt a little bit more like a popcorn movie and she was so instrumental in helping me bridge the gap in terms of not compromising my voice visually or artistically.”
This is Mohan and Sweeney’s third collaboration after Everything Sucks! and The Voyeurs and the actress helped produce the new horror flick. Immaculate follows Cecilia, played by Sydney, who is a “devoutly religious woman” offered a place at a well known convent in Italy.
Soon after arriving, things go wrong for the character and her life takes a terrifying turn. The trailer shows Cecilia having an ultrasound scan to show she is pregnant, assumed to be an “immaculate” conception by the title of the film.
Elsewhere in the trailer, Sweeney is drenched in blood and screaming in the convent while the other nuns watch her from afar without helping. Her bump grows and one scene shows her floating in a large body of water, wearing a long, white gown that emphasises her growing stomach.
