ITV Benidorm stars branded ‘worst act ever’ by Simon Cowell in BGT audition

The cast of ITV’s Benidorm once auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent – but Simon Cowell was not too keen.

The iconic ITV comedy series, created by Derren Litten, premiered way back in 2007 – and instantly became a firm-favourite. The show followed a group of Brits as they headed to the iconic Solana Resort to soak up the sun.

The show was a ratings hit and bagged countless awards including BAFTAs and NTAs. Starring the likes of Sheridan Smith, Siobhan Finneran and Johnny Vegas, the show ran for 11 years. Sadly, in 2018, Benidorm was axed though leaving fans gutted.

But back in 2012, the cast appeared in a hilarious Britain’s Got Talent spoof for Sport Relief. In a bid to be the next big boyband, stars of the hit ITV show tried to impress the judges, including Simon Cowell.

Show regulars Kenneth, played by Tony Maudsley, Mateo (Jake Canuso), Michael (Oliver Stokes) and Liam (Adam Gillen) walked out on the famous stage where they performed Ant and Dec’s Let’s Get Ready To Rumble.

Putting on a show, even Hunky barman Mateo stripped off and encouraged judge Alesha Dixon to give him a rubdown. Unfortunately for the guys, Simon was not too impressed though.

He proclaimed: “This was arguably one of the worst groups I have ever seen in my life.” Benidorm regulars Madge (Siobhan Finneran) and Janice (Sheila Reid) then came busting out onto the stage – not impressed.

Pensioner Madge warned: “Listen Cowell, you know nothing about talent.” She fumed: “If you say anything to my grandson I’ll kick you so hard you’ll be singing soprano to Ding Dong Merrily on High!”

In other Benidorm news, in January, the creator Benidorm confirmed he is returning to the world of TV, leaving many fans hopeful the show could make a comeback.

As well as Benidorm, Litten had also been the brains behind some of the biggest comedy shows of that time. He was also credited for co-writing The Catherine Tate show and also acting in other shows such as French and Saunders and Perfect World.

The ITV show was a ratings smash

Following the demise of Benidorm in 2018, Derren went on to develop a British version of the show, titled Scarborough. After one series aired on BBC One, the show was cancelled, and Derren left the world of TV behind as he opened a bar in Benidorm itself.

But in a statement released to his Twitter account, Derren announced he would be returning to his screenwriting role. He wrote: “It’s been a difficult decision but I have decided to return to writing for both television and theatre.

“I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come,” he continued. “Obviously, there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear that my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family,” he joked as he finished.
