EastEnders’ age-old question about the Queen Vic has finally been answered.
The iconic landmark has been a staple on the show since 1985. Known for the families that have run the pub over the years, and also for the drama that takes place inside, the Queen Vic really is the heart of the square.
It is said that the fictional pub was built in the 1860s and originally had two bars – the public bar and the saloon. According to former landlady Sharon Watts’, the first owners were Mr and Mrs Bagstock.

But throughout the soap’s 39-year-run on TV, many fans have been left stumped over whether or not the iconic pub uses real beer and if smells the boozy beverage. Now, the answer has been revealed.

Last week, pop superstar Olly Alexander had a cameo role on the soap, appearing as the pal of Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff). Arriving at the Vic, Olly enjoyed a drink with his pal during a break from his Eurovision 2024 rehearsals.
Speaking about his EastEnders cameo, Olly dubbed the experience as a “career highlight.” He told Rebecca Judd on Apple Music 1: “I think they just got in touch and said, ‘Would Olly be interested in doing a little walk-on, little cameo role in an episode of EastEnders?’

“And of course, I was like, ‘Please, yes, let me.’ I’ve grown up watching EastEnders and it’s my mum’s favourite TV show.”
When quizzed on what the Queen Vic smells like, he explained: “It does smell a bit like a pub, because they’ve got real the kegs with. Maybe it’s fake ale, but it smells of that leftover beer smell. So there was authenticity there for sure.”

Speaking about his guest appearance, Olly previously gushed: “I’m thrilled to be making my first appearance on EastEnders and in the most iconic pub in the UK. I’m so happy I got to meet some true screen legends and spend time on set with the brilliant cast and crew. I wanted to surprise my mum as it’s her favourite show but I guess the cat is out of the bag now, she’s gonna love it!”
Meanwhile Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said: “When we discovered that Olly Alexander was a huge fan of the show and an opportunity arose in one of our stories, it was the perfect moment for us to invite him to Albert Square to appear.”
