Home Alone house goes up for sale for £4.1m – but fans say ‘owners massacred’ it

The McCallisters’ family home from the iconic Christmas film Home Alone is up for sale, leaving fans of the movie in shock.

The mansion, which was the setting for young Kevin’s (Macaulay Culkin) solo adventures as he defended his home from two bumbling burglars, is on the market for a staggering $5.25 million (around £4,110,330).

The property, located in Winnetka, Illinois, is listed on Redfin and boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a fully equipped gym, marble spa bath, indoor sports court and a ‘state-of-the-art movie etheatre’. However, die-hard fans of the film have expressed their disappointment at the extensive renovations carried out by the current owners, as seen in the video below.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.

Actor and adventure filmmaker Erik Conover recently took viewers on a tour of the house, which hasn’t been up for sale in over 12 years. While the exterior, with its shuttered windows and well-kept lawn, remains instantly recognisable, the interior has undergone significant changes.

Conover highlights the famous staircase where one burglar gets hit in the face with a paint can, and the ‘creepy basement’, known to fans as the home of the radiator monster – both areas have been renovated and now look completely different.

The iconic family breakfast scenes in the bustling kitchen are now a distant memory, as the ultra-modern upgrade boasts double islands, bespoke white cabinetry and a sneaky hidden pantry.

The rest of the house, reports the Mirror, has been turned into a sleek, minimalistic haven – even the once-eerie loft is now just another plain bedroom you’d find in any new build.

And forget about escaping burglars via a zip wire to the treehouse, which is now long gone.

Social media users on X (formerly known as Twitter) have been tearing their hair out over the 2018 renovations. “It’s completely massacred,” vented one user, mourning the loss of the original’s rich, cosy, Christmas-card-perfect vibe.

The outcry was echoed across the platform, with comments pouring in like: “How dare they change it.”

Others labelled the new look “tasteless, cheap and lazy”, and one even reckoned: “This should be illegal.”

But some users pointed out that the interior shots from the film were likely done in a studio as is the procedure in showbiz. “It’s only a coincidence that the staircase looks similar,” suggested one.

Yet, die-hard fans weren’t having it, insisting the set designers took their cues from the home’s original charm.

Estate agents from Redfin claim the ‘hot’ property is expected to shift shortly due to its iconic status. They describe it as a ‘legendary holiday dream home reimagined for modern-day luxury’.

“The stately brick Georgian residence of “Home Alone” fame brings forward a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic movie residences in American pop culture,” they highlighted. “Nestled on a picturesque, tree-lined street in the heart of east Winnetka and elegantly poised behind a wrought-iron gate, the property epitomizes classic Chicago suburban architecture.”
