In a time when health and fitness seem to be the order of the day, it’s surprising to discover that numerous celebrities still indulge in the unhealthy habit of smoking.
Despite being part of an industry where image is everything, many stars from Tinseltown can’t resist reaching for a lighter to ignite a cigarette as they persist with this detrimental habit.
While smoking has lost its appeal among the younger generation, there are concerns that the increasing visibility of celebs lighting up could make the addictive practice attractive to a new demographic.

In the past, many turned to smoking as a means to suppress their appetite, among other reasons. However, the negative effects such as stained teeth and fingers, the overpowering odour, and the severe health consequences continue to act as deterrents.
Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer was a heavy smoker back in the day but has since confessed to giving up the habit, with her public persona now heavily focused on her passion for health and fitness. However, she was spotted puffing on a cigarette in 2022 while celebrating her birthday in a video shared by her former husband Justin Theroux.
He posted the clip on his Instagram but quickly removed it. Jennifer previously revealed that she used to smoke up to a pack a day before quitting in 2007, acknowledging that it was affecting her health, energy levels, and relationships.
Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck’s battle with the cigs has been a long one, starting in 2002 when he was chuffing through a pack a day. Despite tying the knot with Jennifer Lopez in 2022, who initially tolerated his smoky breath, it seems JLo’s patience is wearing thin.
A source spilled the beans to OK! magazine this April, saying: “JLO loves Ben, but she’s tired of his nasty cigarettes. She put up with his smoking at first because it’s his only vice left and she didn’t want to be a nag, but she can’t stand it.”
It’s not just JLo who’s had enough; Ben’s ex, Jennifer Garner, wasn’t having any of it either, finding the habit “disgusting” and keeping him from puffing around their kiddos. When their eldest, Violet, came into the world in 2005, Ben tried to ditch the darts but slipped back into old ways by 2017.
Natalie Portman

Meanwhile, Natalie Portman, the Black Swan icon, has been caught on camera taking a drag or two, despite once being an anti-smoking crusader. Back in her teen years in 1994, at the tender age of 13, she bragged about getting her co-star Jean Reno off the fags during the filming of Leon: The Professional.
She proudly declared back then: “I made my co-star quit smoking,” and went on to say, “I told him it was disgusting… I told him it’s nasty for people around him and it’s not good for him.”
Fast forward to now, and she’s been spotted sharing a ciggie moment with Irish hunk Paul Mescal outside a London bar. She was also spotted puffing away during a night out in New York City back in November.
She was accompanied by a friend at the time, following her alleged “split” from her reportedly “cheating” husband Benjamin Millepied.
Bella Hadid

Bella has previously confessed to smoking a pack a day regularly since she started smoking at the tender age of 14. She stated: “Whether it was eating disorders or smoking… I’m like, ‘Oh, this is what all of the kids are doing.'”.
She did express her determination to quit back in 2017, and made a New Year’s resolution to also give up her JUUL vape in 2019. However, last month she was seen with a cigarette dangling from her lips as she graced the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Dua Lipa

Despite being a professional singer and needing to take extreme measures to protect her vocal cords, Dua Lipa has admitted to being a smoker in the past. She finally decided to quit earlier this year after suffering a concerning infection.
Smoking increases the risk of voice box infections and can wreak havoc on an individual’s voice. Dua developed laryngitis in 2021 which gave her the fright needed to finally kick the habit for good.
She revealed on her podcast: “I had laryngitis in December and that kind of kickstarted me quitting smoking a month earlier than I was supposed to. But I did it and have stuck to it.”
Kiera Knightley

Famed Hollywood actress, Kiera, known to be rather fond of a smoke, picked up the habit at quite a tender age, when she’d bond with her playwright mother, Sharman Macdonald. As she shared in her past Elle interview: “She’d come up to my room, have me roll her cigarettes and then tell me I had to have one with her. It’s not the typical mother-daughter thing, but we were extremely close.”
Kiera seemed to have kissed smoking goodbye in 2012, when she allegedly called out the director of Can A Song Save Your Life for sparking up during filming. However, recent snaps show her reaching for the familiar cigarette pack once again.
Sophie Turner
Sophie openly confessed that she has switched from smoking to vaping previously. However, as fresh as December, she was caught on camera puffing on a ciggy while enjoying her London coffee.
Rumours circulated suggesting that Sophie struggled to let go of her vape when attempting to quit before. One gossip column even claimed that an e-cigarette separation would often lead to her bursting into tears.
Jennifer Lawrence revealed that during their X-Men shooting days, Sophie shed a tear after her vape was confiscated.
Regardless, when Sophie was expecting, she apparently ditched both vices. During her pregnancy with first child, Willa in 2020, and second, Delphine in 2022, there was no sign of her partaking in either habit.
