Matty Barton is hopeful for an early release from prison in the upcoming episodes of Emmerdale but his happiness is cut short by an unexpected visitor in his cell.
In Monday’s episode (July 8), Matty is overjoyed after learning that his cellmate Les has accepted him as a trans man and he can’t wait to share this news with Amy during her visit.
With a new solicitor on board, Matty believes there’s a chance he might be allowed home, which leaves Amy delighted to see Matty in a more upbeat mood.
However, after their visit concludes, Amy sees Matty off and is approached by Robbo, who she confuses for Les.

Unfortunately, Robbo’s feigned sympathy leads Amy to reveal the truth about Matty, unknowingly putting her husband in danger.
When Matty returns to his small cell and Les departs to meet his solicitor, Robbo shows up, causing Matty to panic when he realises the thug has spoken to his wife.
Matty is cornered and frightened when Robbo discloses he’s discovered the truth and the intimidating transphobe corners him. Meanwhile, a cheerful Amy arrives home to share news of Matty’s positive outlook.
Later in the week, Matty’s situation deteriorates while Amy and Moira are puzzled about why they haven’t heard from him.
As regular viewers of the ITV soap will recall, Matty has been held in custody after accidentally stabbing Samson. The incident happened when a dispute between Josh and Matty escalated into violence and Samson was pushed onto the knife Matty was holding.
Samson then misled his family and the authorities, claiming that Matty had intentionally stabbed him.
But next week, Samson announces his plans to leave the village while Matty’s safety hangs in the balance.
Moira is furious whe she learns about Josh and Samson’s plan to embark on their European trip earlier than planned and vows to prevent them.
Meanwhile, Lydia could suspect Samson is hiding something when she witnesses Josh threatening Samson and pressuring him to continue lying to the police. But after meeting with Moira, will Lydia agree to help her?
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
