Alison Hammond says Strictly ‘chaperones’ are ‘good idea’ after more scandals

Telly fave Alison Hammond has spilled the beans on the whispers that Strictly bosses might be bringing in chaperones for the celeb contestants.

The bubbly 49-year-old who gave the dance floor a whirl back in 2014 with pro Aljaz Skorjanec, didn’t hold back on her take about the potential telly bombshell.

All this chinwag comes hot on the heels of the drama surrounding Graziano Di Prima’s supposed boot from the show and the buzz around Giovanni Pernice, sparking chat about whether chaperones should step in to keep the stars safe from any dodgy behaviour by the dance pros.

On Tuesday’s (July 16) natter on This Morning, Alison was all for the idea, saying: “I personally think its a good idea.” Her co-host Dermot O’Leary couldn’t help but ask if she’d have fancied a chaperone herself while she was sashaying around, to which she quipped: “Obviously not, I don’t want a chaperone.

“You just want to enjoy yourself. To be fair, out of the five days training in a week, you probably have cameras in the studio with you three of those days.”

Dermot, ever the inquisitive one, wanted to know if she felt all snug and secure during her Strictly stint, and Alison assured him: “Yeah, I had Aljaz and he was a brilliant teacher.”

“I love working with him and I never had any issues whatsoever but there was always people around filming the rehearsals but there was about two days a week where I always alone with just Aljaz rehearsing but I personally wouldn’t make chaperones if its going to safeguard people.”

The Times has spilled the beans on new measures that could see chaperones keeping a watchful eye during stars’ rehearsals to ensure the pros don’t step out of line. Meanwhile, The Mirror suggests that the show’s dance experts might face tougher screening and get extra training for handling the celebs.

A source told The Times: “The BBC has toughened up its duty of care rules and Sam is now acting as a full-time duty of care exec. She will be discussing the protocols and where they need to be tightened up.”

The source revealed: “It’s 90 per cent a happy ship but the push to win and compete might have meant some overstepping of the mark. We have acted swiftly and decisively to nip that in the bud and it doesn’t take away from almost everyone else having a really lovely, enriching experience from being part of the show.”
