This weekend Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the Super Bowl halftime show, where he will have about 123million pairs of eyes on him.

The 37-year-old rapper, however, is no stranger to success and has had five number ones on the US Billboard Hot 100, 22 Grammy wins, 57 nominations, and a Pulitzer Prize.

Lamar’s career began back in high school, when he released music under the stage name K.Dot. He later signed a contract with Dr Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records and released his album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City in 2012. It became the longest-charting hip hop studio album in the Billboard 200’s history and was named the greatest concept album of all time by Rolling Stone.

Lamar, who has won a slew of accolades including an Emmy Award, a Brit Award, and 11 MTV Video Music Awards, was estimated by Forbes in 2019 to be worth $38.5 million. The hip hop artist has opened up about finances before, and told Vanity Fair in 2018 that he was the first in his family to “have this kind of success”.

In a radio interview with Vibe back in 2014, Lamar said he liked to invest his money in different things “rather than buying things for the moment”. He added: “I really like to buy property, whether it’s apartments, whether it’s buildings, whether it’s houses.”

Lamar’s property purchases include a three-bedroom house in Eastvale, California, which he bought in 2013 for $523,400, according to Architectural Digest. Four years later, he spent $2.65 million on a 5,400-sqft home in Calabases, California.

He is also said to own a $9.7 million mansion in Manhattan Beach, California, a $15.85 million midcentury ranch-style house in Bel Air, and a $8.6 million penthouse in New York City. Lamar’s most expensive property is his $42 million compound in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

The rapper has said that it was important for him to move out of Compton after becoming successful. In an interview with NME he said: “I’m not one of those people that say, ‘When I get rich I’m gonna keep it extra 100 and be on the block all day’. No! It’s like this: you from the hood, you wanna get out the hood. The initiative is to get out, for somebody to get out to show us some type of way of life.”

He has partnered with American Express on advertising campaigns and has been a brand ambassador for Reebok and Nike. He has previously created an original song for the promotion of Microsoft’s Window Phone and starred alongside Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding in a Bacardi campaign.

Lamar will now be heading to the Super Bowl after his success at the Grammys, where he took home the awards for song and record of the year, for his diss track Not Like Us. When asked what viewers can expect from his performance at the NFL championship game, Lamar said: “Storytelling. I think I’ve always been very open about storytelling through all my catalogue and my history of music. And I’ve always had a passion about bringing that on whatever stage I’m on.”
