BAFTA host David Tennant fears ‘picking fights’ after ‘peeving off’ A-lister

David Tennant has revealed that he made a joke about Cate Blanchett at last year’s BAFTA Film Awards that didn’t go down too well with the Hollywood star

As David Tennant gears up to host the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, he’s vowed to avoid any jokes that might make the glitzy world of Hollywood squirm in their seats.

The star recently opened up about a gag from the previous year’s bash involving Cate Blanchett that didn’t quite hit the mark, leaving the actress less than amused, apparently.

Chatting with Radio Times, Tennant spilled the beans: “The BAFTAs are supposed to be kind. Last year we weren’t trying to roast people, but there was a joke about Cate Blanchett, and she looked a little bit annoyed, a little bit p***ed off.

“And I remember going, ‘Oh God, no. I think you’re brilliant.

“I was just trying to be witty and make a point about how you’ve got lots of prizes, and we love you.'”

Known for his stint as the Doctor in Doctor Who, Tennant insists his approach to hosting is all about honouring showbiz rather than poking fun at its stars, reports the Express.

He continued: “I think if I’ve learned anything, it’s probably that I’m not interested in picking fights or making anyone feel in any way uncomfortable. If I have a style, it’s only that.”

At last year’s event, Tennant’s attempt at humour involved a playful jab at Blanchett during his opening spiel.

As he weighed in on the evening’s potential victors, he quipped: “I always thought, like the seat planner would know and they’d put winners at the front, at the end of an aisle but no, they’ve got hidden cameras, they can pick you up anywhere so if you’ve got to scramble and climb over Cate Blanchett to get your hands on an award, that is what you do.”

He cheekily continued: “It’s a metaphor for the acting industry generally.” Although chuckles ripped through the crowd, Blanchett’s expression hinted that she might not have found the joke entirely funny.

Tennant has been vocal about adopting a different hosting style than other well-known names who push boundaries with edgier jokes.

While events like the Golden Globes are known for roasting the top of showbiz world, as demonstrated by this year’s host Nikki Glaser taking jabs at Timothée Chalamet and Martin Short, Tennant wants to position the BAFTAs as a celebration rather than a roast of those in the film business.
