Many of us grew up watching and reading Harry Potter but one couple were in for a shock after one of the iconic Weasley twins ruined their proposal
The Weasley twins are fan-favourite characters of the Harry Potter series. But their cheeky charm and desire for mischief may have left the big screen with actor Oliver Phelps disrupting a couple’s romantic moment in a typical George Weasley way.
The 38-year-old Harry Potter star revealed he has had a “few shameful incidents” on holiday but one in particular on New Year’s Eve will scar him for a while – ruining a couple’s proposal.
The incident in question happened as he and his wife Katy were watching the iconic Sydney Harbour fireworks display to bring in the new year. However, the night took a turn when a man continued to bother them as he tried to get them to move out of the way.
In classic Weasley fashion, Oliver was having none of it, firmly standing his ground and trying to enjoy the rest of the display while ignoring this man’s request. But Oliver’s actions blew up in his face creating one of the most “shameful” moments of his life so far. As soon as he and his wife finally moved away the man was quick to get down on one knee and popped the big question to his partner.
Speaking to The Times, Phelps said: “I’ve had a few shameful incidents on holiday too, one New Year’s Eve I was watching the fireworks on Sydney harbour with my wife, Katy.
“A few minutes before the clock struck midnight a guy started to bug me for my space. Being stubborn I didn’t want to give it up and miss out on a romantic moment, so I refused to budge, [but] eventually I moved to one side when the fireworks had finished and there was just a cloud of smoke left.
“The guy proceeded to get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend, with not a firework left in sight — I felt terrible!”
The actor revealed that the encounter has somewhat scarred him from revisiting the Australian city and his memory of the trip has been tainted. Although the star has been back since on several occasions for appearances at several Harry Potter fan conventions so time may have helped heal his wound.
Oliver along with his identical twin James brought the iconic fictional brothers alive on the silver screen, appearing in the first film in 2001 all the way through to the final film in 2011. The pair have continued to work together as a duo since the franchise came to a wrap – even hosting a Harry Potter themed Great British Bake Off style show for Food Network last year.
The pair also are known for their podcasts, with their Normal Not Normal series looking at what normality really is and if it even exists. The show has included interviews with various celebs including actor Tom Hopper, wrestler Sasha Banks and former Harry Potter co-star Evanna Lynch.
