Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter kicked of the BRIT Awards 2025 with a saucy routine that saw her strip to sparkling red lingerie and make reference to an intimate act
Some BRIT Awards viewers weren’t happy with Sabrina Carpenter’s steamy routine.
Some of the biggest names in music and TV gathered at London’s O2 Arena for the 2025 BRIT Awards on Saturday night (March 1). Charli XCX sweeped up five awards at the ceremony, including best artist and song of the year.
However, it seems a lot of people were talking about a raunchy opening routine from pop goddess Sabrina Carpenter’, who has just announced a second BST Hyde Park show later this year. The 25-year-old Grammy winner performed her 2024 hits Espresso and Bed Chem at the start of the show, which was broadcast on ITV and ITVX from 8:15pm, before the 9pm watershed..
The former Disney star was flanked by scores of dancers dressed in the traditional red clothing of the King’s Guard, complete with bearskin hats. The pop star writhed around on the stage while wearing glittery red lingerie, with fishnet stockings and suspenders.
At one point, she appeared to suggest an intimate bedroom act when she kneeled in front of a male dancer, who then gave a cheeky wink to the camera. However, some viewers weren’t happy with the spicy performance and others predicted people would be complaining to broadcast watchdog Ofcom.
One viewer posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Christ, you might as well put p*** on prime time Saturday night. What is Sabrina Carpenter doing?” Another complained: “‘As a dad of 11 and 13 year old girls I am fuming that this was the opening scenes of #BRITs2025”.
One suggested they’d be complaining to Ofcom themselves as they wrote: “Catching up on The BRITs… By the way my eldest didn’t blink once whilst watching it, minded to complain to Ofcom myself about Sabrina Carpenter.”
A fourth fumed: “How nasty. Sorry not a good idea to open up with before 9pm! It’s still family time, very inappropriate.” However, others seemed to love Sabrina’s performance and defended her against the backlash.
One suggested: “Sabrina already getting Ofcom complaints for her BRITS performance is so funny why does this country hate having fun,” posted on X. Another added: “Sabrina Carpenter doing Bed Chem pre-watershed? The Ofcom complaints about that performance are gonna be through the roof but I enjoyed it. That’s my girl! #BRITs.”
Another gushed: “SABRINAS PERFORMANCE WAS AMAZING!! but im so scared bc i just know people are gonna complain. we love you sab,” as another shared: “People criticising Sabrina Carpenter’s outfit/performance clearly don’t understand her lore. She’s iconic.”
It’s yet to be seen whether the routine will make it to Ofcom’s weekly audience complaints report. An Ofcom spokesperson said programmes with fifty complaints or more make it into their weekly audience complaint report, which is published every Wednesday.
Sabrina picked up the Global Success Award later in the evening, becoming the first ever international artist to get given the prize. Past winners of the award include Adele and Ed Sheeran.
