Sabrina Carpenter’s raunchy performance at the BRIT Awards has been hit with Ofcom complaints as viewers were left shocked by the X-rated show for the innuendo laded song
Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter’s steamy set at the BRIT Awards has stirred the pot, racking up Ofcom complaints from viewers taken aback by her saucy dance moves.
The singer got Saturday night’s festivities underway with a medley of her hits Espresso and Bed Chem, donning a fiery red lacy getup for the number.
Her performance with dancers, oozing with innuendos, hit the screens live on ITV and ITVX from 8:15pm, well ahead of the typical 9pm watershed, leaving some audiences disgruntled and expecting a flurry of Ofcom complaints. Rounding off her act, Sabrina, who will headline BST Hyde Park across two weekends this summer, dramatically knelt before a male dancer who cheekily winked at the camera — a move that quickened the pulse of social media onlookers.
As comments flooded Twitter, one user proclaimed: “RIP to the 9pm watershed,” while another lamented the discomfort of watching with the folks: “Well this is just an awkward watch sat with the parents.”
Another fan chimed in: “I love Sabrina so much cos I can see the British public reporting this to Ofcom immediately,” and yet another critique read: “Bit inappropriate for an awards show…”
With many predicting a barrage of complaints to Ofcom, the regulator has confirmed an influx of 825 complaints tied to the award ceremony, with the lion’s share concerning Sabrina Carpenter’s headline-grabbing routine, and complemented by gripes about Charlie XCX’s attire, reports the Mirror.
Artists stirring up controversy at the BRITs isn’t anything new. Just two years back, a total of 106 complaints were lodged about the ceremony, with fingers pointed at Sam Smith’s performance.
The singer belted out the contentious track Unholy, sparking outrage over offensive language and boozy antics on stage. Fast forward to 2020, and ITV was bombarded with 309 Ofcom complaints, as viewers branded Dave’s rap about Boris Johnson “racist”.
The UK rapper didn’t hold back, branding the ex-PM “racist” and slamming his handling of the Windrush scandal. A whopping 257 viewers were so incensed by Dave’s set that they rang Ofcom to label it “racist in itself”.
Stormzy also got caught in the crossfire during the same event, with 39 complaints about alleged racism in his act. But the media watchdog wasn’t having any of it, dismissing the gripes against Dave and Stormzy, stating artists often voice their political stances on stage.
In the wake of some raised eyebrows, Sabrina didn’t shy away from addressing whether her performance was suitable for family viewing. She took to social media, posting a collection of snaps from the event, including behind-the-scenes shots and her stunning appearance on the BRITs red carpet.
Accompanying her photos, Sabrina cheekily quipped: “Brits i now know what watershed is!” Fans were quick to rally behind the star, with one admirer gushing: “They can never make me hate you sweetie.”
Another fan hailed her as: “Sabrina Carpenter the pop princess that you are.” A third supporter declared: “QUEEN SHAKING THE NATION.”
While another simply stated: “She leaves quite an impression!” At the BRITs, Sabrina also snagged the Global Success Award, marking her as the first international artist to receive the accolade, joining the ranks of past winners like Adele and Ed Sheeran. Meanwhile, the awards night had its share of jaw-dropping moments, notably from actor Danny Dyer who unleashed a bleep-worthy tirade that ITV had to mute.
In a bit of a telly blunder, ITV had to hit the bleep button during the broadcast when Danny introduced a video message from Chappell Roan, cheekily saying she “couldn’t be f***** to be here”. Later on, host Jack Whitehall found himself in hot water with BRITs viewers after making a jest about P Diddy’s infamous “white parties”, following JADE’s performance of Angel of My Dreams in all-white garb.
Fans were not impressed, voicing their distaste on social media. One viewer tweeted: “Jack Whitehall making a Diddy joke was so tasteless and tone deaf,” while another was just as miffed: “Mentioning Diddy after the whole, very blatant, message of JADE’s performance? Get this man off my screen.”
