Insidious franchise filled with horrifying Easter eggs you’ve never spotted

Insidious is widely regarded as one of the most terrifying horror films of the 21st century, but we bet you’ve never realised there are a number of hidden Easter eggs all throughout the series

Insidious is littered with Easter eggs.

The horror film, released in 2010, is the first instalment in the Insidious franchise and follows a married couple whose son enters a coma-like state, making him an easy target for demons in the astral plane to take over.

Many filmgoers were left terrified by the creepy supernatural ghosts and ghouls that appear throughout the film – so much so that there are definitely Easter eggs you missed the first time around.

Director James Wan added a Billy the Puppet cameo in the first film, which could easily be missed by viewers. In one scene, Josh, played by Patrick Wilson, is on the phone while working late in his classroom.

Billy from Saw can be seen drawn on the chalkboard behind Josh

Behind him, eagle-eyed film fans can spot scrawls and scribbles written across the chalkboard but one thing in particular stands out.

A drawing of Billy from the Saw franchise hovers over his shoulder, a reference to writers James Wand and Leigh Wannell’s previous project. Wan’s name can be seen written above the image while a number eight is written underneath Billy’s chin.

At the time, Saw was seven movies deep in the franchise so horror fans took this as a hint that there would be an eighth movie.

The red-faced demon is one of the biggest jumpscares in the film

Another fun fact about Insidious is that the black and red demon is played by Joseph Bishara, who also composed the score for the film. He’s also worked on the soundtracks of The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Conjuring 2.

Other Easter eggs in the Insidious franchise include nods to other famous horror films of the past. 1982’s Poltergeist is referenced when Leigh Wannell’s character puts a steak on his face.

Rose Byrne’s character Renai recreates a scene from 1973’s The Exorcist when she’s freaked out in the attic, while the seance scene pays homage to 1980’s The Changeling.

Insidious has a number of wild Easter eggs

One of the film’s most iconic moments takes place when Renai seens a boy dancing in her front room, but spooked film fans may not have noticed that the same child can be seen stood in the corridor facing the wall just half a minute earlier.

Midway through the film, Josh enters The Further in an attempt to find and save his son.

In real life, these scenes were reportedly shot in the Herald Examiner Building in Los Angeles, a place known for covering some of the city’s goriest crimes.
