ITV favourite Stephen Mulhern has been hit with a major career setback as he’s been axed from his lucrative £1million role as the face of Butlins, capping off a run of bad luck with work engagements.

Mulhern, 48, won’t be having his contract with the beloved UK holiday resort chain renewed. He used to dazzle families with magic shows at Butlins’ spots in Minehead, Bognor Regis and Skegness, but his act won’t be part of the line-up after this summer’s season.

A spokesperson confirmed the departure and mentioned that the star, who once donned the iconic redcoat, had “enjoyed” his stint with the company.

The spokesperson revealed to the Mirror: “Stephen has absolutely loved being part of the Butlin’s family – performing his stage shows in front of thousands of holiday makers across the country and the relationship with Butlin’s remains hugely positive.

“This change allows Stephen to explore new opportunities in the family holiday space – something he’s incredibly passionate about.”, reports the Daily Record.

A representative for Butlin’s chimed in: “Stephen has been an incredible part of the Butlin’s experience and continues to be a valued member of the family. Stephen’s much-loved live show won’t return in 2026 after three fantastic years, but we’re thrilled to be working together on ongoing projects this autumn.”

Stephen’s Butlin’s axe was spilled by the Sun, with an insider revealing: “Stephen has been a massive hit with holidaymakers. He began his career as a Redcoat and has kept families brilliantly entertained.”

The telly magician saw his stint on ITV’s Dancing On Ice come to a chilly end earlier this year when the show got the boot due to dismal ratings, after Stephen had stepped in to co-host alongside Holly Willoughby in January.

He filled the shoes of Phillip Schofield, who was given the elbow from all his ITV gigs following a scandalous revelation of an affair with a younger colleague at This Morning in 2023.

And last year, Stephen waved goodbye to another one of his telly projects, In For A Penny, after it wrapped up its sixth series, though whispers suggest it might make a comeback.

A source previously dished to The Sun: “So don’t put your pennies away just yet as the team could be popping up in your local town, to challenge even more members of the public to take part in their unique and madcap games in the future.”

Stephen also endured a rough patch personally last year with the loss of his dad.

He honoured his late father with a heartfelt nod during his Royal Variety Performance act last December, telling the cheering crowd: “That was for you dad.”

Despite the setbacks, the TV star is still at the helm of ITV’s Deal for No Deal, which made a return in 2023.
