Glastonbury bosses shut down area as Lorde performs surprise set as fans go wild

Glastonbury bosses have been forced to shut down part of the festival as crowds descend on a tent to see a secret set from pop star Lorde, with festivalgoers told ‘Woodies is now full’

Glastonbury chiefs have had to close off a section of the festival as hordes of fans flocked to a tent. Revellers rushed to catch pop sensation Lorde’s surprise set, which proved too much for the festival organisers.

An insider told the Mirror: “It’s sweltering inside the tent given the amount of people crammed inside. Bosses are urging people to stand up off the floor to make room. Some people are leaving as it’s so intense.”

However, as the crowd overflowed from the tent, the source added: “Bosses have now shut down Woodsies as crowds are so big with a festival-wide message saying: ‘Woodies is now full’.”

This comes shortly after Glastonbury chiefs revealed the acts they anticipate will attract the largest crowds today. Last year, the festival faced severe overcrowding problems as fans hurried to see their favourite performers.

Festival bosses utilise data from the Glastonbury app which indicates what acts fans plan to see – ensuring the information is accurate. The biggest crowds are expected for Lorde at Woodsies, as well as Lola Young, Blossoms and Pink Pantheress, reports the Mirror.

They also predict large turnouts for Rudimental and Fatboy Slim at Lonely Hearts, Maribou State on West Holts, Fratellis on Avalon and Example in Shangri-La.

Bosses caution: “There will be large crowds at the Pyramid, Other, West Holts and Park Stages too – with plenty of space to accommodate them.

“This evening, Arcadia will be busy. The one way system in the South East Corner is also likely to come into play.We expect that there will be one in, one out queues on some of our tented venues, and on occasion it may be necessary to divert you around some areas when they are at capacity. Please listen to stewards and be patient with them.”

They further stated: “When leaving our bigger arenas and venues, please remember there are lots of you. If you take your time the crowds will thin out and you’ll get out more easily. And when heading to stages remember, we have a lot of alternative routes to places, the shortest route will often not be the quickest.”

The festival has already experienced a shaky start for some, as fans voiced their complaints about the opening ceremony on Wednesday night. Festival-goers reported there was ‘no sound’ emanating from the speakers during the eagerly awaited opening ceremony at Pyramid Stage, leading to a sense of restlessness among the crowd.

Festival attendees took to social media to tag the official Glasto page on X/Twitter and question what was happening during the ’embarrassing’ set.

One user remarked: “This #Glastonbury opening ceremony is embarrassing as f***,” while another queried: “Is there meant to be no sound at the #Glastonbury2025 opening ceremony? Local regs? Crowds a bit restless at the back #Glastonbury.”
