Rod Stewart forced to leave Glastonbury stage and issues urgent message to crowd

Rod Stewart rocked the Legends slot on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on Sunday [29 June], but one glaring issue meant he was forced to remove himself halfway through the set

Rod Stewart had to leave his Glastonbury set to deal with a very important issue.

The rocker treated the Glasto crowd to a trip down memory lane on Sunday [29 June], but had to hand over the reins to his backing singers halfway through the set.

The 80-year-old singer was nearly an hour into his performance when he declared that he was leaving the stage. Straight after delighting the audience with his rendition of Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, Rod told the crowd: “The girls are going to do a song for you while I change my shirt!”

Rod had already shed his jacket while battling with the scorching heat at Worthy Farm. His singers kept the crowd entertained with a stirring performance of Lady Marmalade, reports Birmingham Live.

When Rod did make his return, he’d swapped his airy white shirt and jeans combo for a bold pink suit. Stewart also invited Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis onto the stage to wish him a happy birthday.

He also encouraged the crowd to join in with him on the classic tune I Don’t Wanna Talk About It before introducing Mick Hucknall to the stage, and the pair sang Simply Red’s If You Don’t Know Me By Now.

Later, Rod also welcomed Ronnie Wood and Lulu to the stage following yet another wardrobe switch. This time, he chose an emerald green ensemble.

Fans were initially sceptical, with many puzzled as to why Sir Rod wasn’t performing his own hits and some Twitter users expressed disappointment, with one grumbling: “This Rod Stewart performance. It’s just so s*. Strong Benidorm/Phoenix Club vibes. #Glastonbury.”

Another disgruntled viewer complained: “”Why is Rod Stewart “singing” (use the term loosely) covers and not his own hits #Glastonbury.”

However, opinions began to shift as one enthusiastic fan tweeted: “#Glastonbury. Like him or not. Rod Stewart has still got it! He’s a showman, great entertainer, and can work a crowd. You go Rod! Big shout out to his band.”

Before the show Rod’s wife Penny Lancaster was spotted mingling with groups of fans, happily posing for photos alongside people wearing wigs in tribute to the singer.

His performance marks Rod’s return to the Pyramid Stage after a 23-year hiatus, and amid hints that he may be considering scaling back his world tours.

In a recent Instagram post, Rod hinted: “This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire. I love what I do and I do what I love. I’m fit, have a full head of hair and can run 100 metres in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79.”
