Piers Morgan has pulled out of a planned Sports Relief boxing match with Alastair Campbell, saying his sons warned him he could “kill” him.
The 54-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter said he spoke to his sons – Albert, Spencer and Stanley – who warned him off the fight with his 62-year-old opponent – and Piers had been told he and Alastair would not be allowed to aim for each other’s heads.
He said his middle son had warned that, due to Alastair’s age, the chance of serious injury, or even death, if Piers took him on.
The controversial broadcaster said: “I mulled it over, would it be a good or bad career move if I was to kill Alastair Campbell in a boxing ring?

“I took an honest human view. I decided to spare Alastair Campbell’s life.
“He’s taken it badly, he’s gonna be there on Sports Relief day with a cardboard cut-out.”
Piers went on: “I have spared the life of Alastair Campbell.
“The truth is, I’m selfless and I like to give back and I’m a humanitarian and I put life before anything else, even Alastair Campbell.”
Alastair has been hitting out at Piers on Twitter since he pulled out of the boxing match.

He wrote: “Please give generously in return for me taking down Piers Morgan. He may have bottled the boxing but there are plenty of other ways to skin a coward-cat.”
On a JustGiving fundraising page, he said: “Undeterred I have got myself a Piers Morgan cardboard cut-out and we will be going head to head in a series of challenges – a penalty shoot out, running on a treadmill set at the world’s quickest marathon pace, and trying to complete 5k in the time it takes for an orchestra to play Beethoven’s Fifth.”
Piers’ GMB co-host Susanna Reid was among the first to donate to Alastair, though the amount was kept private on the page.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
