The delay announcement comes following three months of a movie industry shutdown caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic that has affected many countries worldwide.
    Jun 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Britain’s BAFTA Film Awards have been postponed by two months, following news the Oscars will be delayed by the same period.
Originally set to run on February 14, 2021, the ceremony will now take place on April 11, 2021.
The delay comes following three months of a movie industry shutdown due to the coronavirus crisis.
“This change from the previously announced date of Feb. 14 acknowledges the impact of the global pandemic and accommodates an extended eligibility period,” a representative for BAFTA said in a statement on Monday, June 15. “Further details on the ceremony will be announced later in the year.”
The announcement comes hours after Academy Awards producers opted to push next year’s Oscars to April 25, 2021 – the latest date in the year the prizegiving has ever been held.
Films like Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”, “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, and biopics “King Richard” and “Respect” are among the films tipped to land nominations.

Abrupt Pulling of 'The King of Staten Island' From Drive-In Theaters Upsets Venue Owners

    Universal Pictures/Mary Cybulski

Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical film, directed by Judd Apatow, has been set to premiere on video-on-demand services following shutdown caused by the novel coronavirus.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Comedian Pete Davidson’s new movie “The King of Staten Island” was abruptly pulled from drive-in theatres across the U.S. on Thursday (June 11) over a release mix-up.
The semi-autobiographical film, directed by Judd Apatow, was only supposed to premiere on video-on-demand services on Friday after previously ditching plans for a theatre release as a result of the coronavirus shutdown.
However, bosses at a number of drive-in venues, who have been welcoming film fans in their cars to view mostly older movies, began selling tickets for “The King of Staten Island” after receiving screening bookings from officials at Universal Studios.
But the events were quickly pulled, much to theatre owners’ annoyance.
“There was no explanation (from Universal). They changed their mind,” grumbled one venue owner to Variety.com, while another complained, “This caused a considerable amount of ill will with customers who bought tickets online showing up for the Thursday 7pm show.”
Apatow had earlier warned Twitter followers the film would only be available on at-home digital services, and now sources claim the release mistake was the result of an internal misunderstanding at Universal.

” ‘The King of Staten Island’ was always intended to premiere exclusively on-demand, however, some executives unintentionally booked the film in about 100 theaters,” an insider explained.
“When they realized the mistake, the studio went back to theatres and asked them not to play it.”
Universal representatives have yet to comment on the blunder.
“The King of Staten Island” is the latest film studio chiefs decided to release to video-on-demand during the coronavirus lockdown, following the April launch of “Trolls World Tour”, which proved to be a huge hit for families isolated at home.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Talks to Develop Spin-Off About James Bond's Daughter

    WENN

The ‘Killing Eve’ creator has reportedly been approached by movie bosses to pen a spin-off series that document how the daughter of 007 becomes an agent herself.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Phoebe Waller-Bridge is reportedly in talks to work on a female-led James Bond spin-off series.
Sources told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper movie bosses have approached the “Killing Eve” star to pen a franchise documenting how the daughter of 007 becomes an agent herself.
The news follows Waller-Bridge’s work on the script for upcoming Bond film “No Time to Die”, star Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007, in which the agent is reportedly a dad.
The long-awaited movie will be released in November after its premiere was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Now sources have told The Sunday Mirror the exciting plot twist is opening new doors regarding the future of the series, “Bond bosses are very excited about 007 having a daughter and creating a new franchise around her.”
“It is likely to feature Bond conflicted over having to train her up as an assassin combined with Waller-Bridge’s trademark black humour, shown in ‘Killing Eve’,” they continued. “She may just offer ideas and co-produce as roles are yet to be decided, but bosses are keen to give her a big part in the film’s production.”
“No Time to Die” will hit U.K. cinemas on 12 November, before receiving a global release on 20 November.

'Gone With the Wind' to Make HBO Max Return With Black Scholar Introduction

    TCM

African American cinema and media studies professor Jacqueline Stewart explains in her op-ed for CNN why people ‘can’t turn away’ from the 1939 movie adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Hollywood classic “Gone with the Wind” is to return to the HBO Max streaming platform after being temporarily removed due to the “racial prejudices” on display in the movie.
The 1939 movie adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel about the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era South won eight Academy Awards, including a best supporting actress gong for Hattie McDaniel, who was the first black person to be nominated for and win an Oscar.
While the controversial film was removed from the on-demand service in the wake of global protests supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, after African-American George Floyd was killed at the hands of Minnesota police officers last month, it has since been announced “Gone with the Wind” will return with a new introduction by Jacqueline Stewart, host of “Silent Sunday Nights” on Turner Classic Movies and professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago in Illinois.
In an op-ed posted on CNN on Saturday, June 13, Stewart explained why people “can’t turn away” from the once-acclaimed drama.
“HBO Max will bring ‘Gone with the Wind’ back to its line-up, and when it appears, I will provide an introduction placing the film in its multiple historical contexts,” Stewart shared. “For me, this is an opportunity to think about what classic films can teach us. Right now, people are turning to movies for racial re-education, and the top-selling books on Amazon are about anti-racism and racial inequality.”
“If people are really doing their homework, we may be poised to have our most informed, honest and productive national conversations yet about Black lives on screen and off.”
A date for the movie’s return to the platform has yet to be announced.

New Release Date for 'Tenet' Pushes 'Wonder Woman 1984' to October

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Gal Gadot’s much-anticipated return as Diana Prince and her superhero alter ego is no longer set to hit theaters on August 14, whereas Russell Crowe’s ‘Unhinged’ gets one week delay.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Wonder Woman” has met her match in filmmaker Christopher Nolan.
Gal Gadot’s much-anticipated return to the big screen in America, as Diana Prince and her superhero alter ego, has been delayed to October, following news that Nolan’s “Tenet” will hit the big screen two weeks later than expected on 31 July.
“Wonder Woman 1984” was scheduled to debut on 14 August but film bosses fear “Tenet” will still be the blockbuster to beat two weeks after its release, and they’ve decided to move the sequel.
Movie experts expect “Tenet” to be the biggest film to hit cinemas following the U.S. COVID-19 shutdown.
Meanwhile, Russell Crowe’s new film, “Unhinged”, which was billed as this summer’s big Independence Day holiday release in America, has also moved from 1 July to 10 July, and Angelina Jolie’s “The One and Only Ivan” will no longer hit the big screen this summer, as planned.
Instead, the film will be released exclusively on the Disney+ streaming service.
Jolie produced the movie and voices one of the characters in the film, which will hit the small screen on 21 August.
Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren and Chaka Khan also voice characters.

Salma Hayek, Guillermo Del Toro Join Fundraisers for Mexican Struggling Movie Workers

    WENN

The Mexican actors and filmmakers are joining forces to raise money to help the movie workers who lost employment due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
    Jun 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Salma Hayek and Mexican directors, Guillermo Del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, have set up a fund to help Mexican movie workers who have lost employment due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
With productions halted across the world, including in Mexico, which has had more than 130,000 coronavirus cases and over 15,000 deaths, employees who’d normally be working on set are facing hardship.
To help those in need, the actress and filmmakers have teamed up with The Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematograficas (The Mexican Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences) to launch the fund, which was announced on Thursday, June 11, 2020.
Speaking via video call, Gonzalez Inarritu told The Hollywood Reporter the project is “an act of solidarity with our colleagues in this industry, without asking anybody else besides ourselves.”
The fund has raised about $440,000 already, with the likes of Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna also contributing with more donations expected. Currently, beneficiaries will receive a one-time payment of about $885.
The money will go first to technical workers on set, costume, as well as sound and visual employees, with those who are suffering health problems or who are their family’s sole earners having priority.
Mexico’s government is yet to announce a date when production of films can resume.
