Kate Garraway admits Coca Cola's 'bring daddy home' advert is 'tough to watch'

Kate Garraway has admitted that she found the new Coca Cola Christmas advert a “tough watch”.

The festive trailer shows a father, who works on an oil rig, venturing to the North Pole to give Santa Claus his daughter’s Christmas list.

However, the grotto is closed, so the dad opens the letter, and it says: “Dear Santa, Please bring daddy home for Christmas.”

Kate’s husband Derek Draper has been in hospital since March when he was seriously ill with coronavirus.

The couple’s children Billy, 11, and daughter Darcy, 14, have not been able to see their dad since he was hospitalised.

Former Labour lobbyist Derek, 53, was put into a medically induced coma and remains in intensive care, unable to communicate except to recently mouth the word “pain”.

Kate and co host Ben Shephard were discussing Christmas adverts on Good Morning Britain on Friday, when Kate said Ben felt “uncomfortable” at the sad Coca Cola message.

Kate explained: “It is tough I think for all the advertisers at the moment, because it is their job to pull on our heart strings.

“It is their job to get people to spend, but they are also causing a lot of upset from people as well.

“I know Ben feels very uncomfortable about this because of my personal circumstances, but the Coca Cola advert ends with a request that all they want from Father Christmas is daddy home.

“Obviously tough for me, tough for other people that have reacted as well.

“It’s a strange situation with so much loss, so much fear, so much separation.

“It’s a strange emotional time for retailers to get right.”

Earlier in the show, Kate revealed that Derek has had a “tough old week” as he continues to battle the effects of coronavirus in hospital.

Derek was rushed to hospital back in March after contracting Covid-19.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
