Simon Cowell to make first public appearance since breaking back in freak crash

Simon Cowell is set to return to the spotlight next month after breaking his back earlier this summer.

The X Factor mogul, 61, will appear virtually at the Fayre of St James’s 2020 Christmas Concert on 1 December.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the annual event has moved online but still hopes to raise as much money as possible for The Childhood Trust and The Felix Projecy.

It will be the first time Simon has attended any public events since his horror bike fall.

He will be joined by Jack Whitehall, Rupert Everertt and Stephen Fry.

James Bay, Emili Sandé and James Blunt are all set to perform.

Simon had been due to return to the small screen for the Britain’s Got Talent final earlier this year.

However, on doctor’s orders he remained at his Malibu home to continue his recovery.

Simon was replaced by Ashley Banjo who won BGT in 2009 as part of dance troop Diversity.

The current plan is for Simon to be back in the judging seat when the auditions for the 2021 series kick off in January.

A source told The Sun: “Simon was gutted at having to sit out of the show this year.

“But he’s been totally focused on getting better and will definitely be back on the panel.

“He’s come on in leaps and bounds recently, thanks to letting his body heal, a healthy diet and some California sun.

“He’s also enjoyed being surrounded by his family. But he loves his job and is raring to go, especially as BGT offers so much joy and light entertainment in dark times.

“The panel are all really excited to have him back, though they thought Ashley did a great job and he’ll definitely perform on the show again next year with Diversity.”

In August Simon fell off his electric bike in a freak accident.

The star was rushed to hospital where he had emergency surgery and reports claimed he was close to paralysing himself.

A friend of the X Factor legend told the Mirror: “He was in incredible, ridiculous amounts of pain and also in shock. His back was broke in several places, but he is actually very lucky.

“He fell flat on his back and the doctors say the impact missed his spinal cord by about a centimetre and it could have been a lot, lot more serious.”
