Coronation Street fans perplexed by Geoff family 'plot hole' in Tim scene

Coronation Street fans suggested they had discovered a plot hole in the Geoff Metcalfe storyline this evening, as the Corrie villain failed to mention his son’s illiteracy.

Sitting together in the park, Tim Metcalfe raised his concerns about his childhood, confused about the identity of his real mother.

Geoff was quick to console him, regaling him with stories of his childhood.

He claimed to have taught his son about magic – but never mentioned Tim’s inability to read and write.

Back in 2014, Tim’s illiteracy was a major storyline, as the window cleaner bravely decided to educate himself.

Tim raised a few questions about his childhood this evening

Taking to Twitter this evening, viewers wondered why Geoff mentioned teaching his son magic tricks – but not basic reading or writing skills.

One said: “I still can’t believe they haven’t explained or expired why Cotswold Geoff never knew his son couldn’t read or write. #corrie.”

“True, enough. Guy like Geoff would be well ashamed of an illiterate kid. In fact, I doubt he’d even allow it to happen,” agreed a second.

And a third chimed: “Sick of this now….that the hell does Tim’s birth certificate say? And yes Tim, he was such a good dad, he didn’t teach you how to read…”

Pretending to be a caring father, Geoff told Tim all about his magic tricks, insisting his son begged him to teach him some lessons in magic.

He asked: “Was I ever a bad dad?”

Six years ago, Tim was deeply ashamed when those close to him discovered he had never learned to read or write, admitting he battled feelings of insecurity his entire life.

Glossing over the lack of an education his son had received, this evening’s episode saw Geoff paint his ex-wife as an alcoholic.

Desperate to keep the identity of Tim’s real mother a secret, he bluffed: “Didn’t I always look after you even when your mum was drunk and off her head?”

How long will it be until Tim finds out the truth about his past?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
