Johnny Depp credits Sir Elton John for getting him sober in emotional email

Johnny Depp has credited music legend Sir Elton John with helping getting him clean and sober.

The Hollywood superstar spoke frankly about his drug abuse during the first day his his High Court showdown against The Sun on claims of libel in which his ex Amber Heard is the publications main witness.

During the proceedings Sasha Wass, QC, explained how Jonny had made ‘a real effort… to clean yourself up’ in 2012 – highlighting the email he sent in 2012 to Elton.

The email read: ‘My dearest Elton, 100 f****** days of clarity for an old reprobate t*** like me.

“No one would ever have believed it possible but for a select few, most importantly you.”

He signed off the email: “I would have been swallowed up by the monster were it not for you.”

Jonny confirmed that he did manage to get sober though later relapsed.

The actor said: “I got sober off alcohol and remained sober… I can’t remember exactly how long but it was a long while.”

Elton himself has been very public about his own personal battles with drugs and alcohol.

Now 30 years sober, the Rocket Man has used his life experience to help others in the spotlight also struggling to cope.

As well as his Bad Romance superstar Lady Gaga, rapper Eminem says Elton reached out to support him in his hour of need.

Elton previously told The Telegraph: “I’m Eminem’s AA sponsor. Whenever I ring to check in on him, he always greets me the same way:

“Hello, you ******’, which I guess is very Eminem.”

Taking to social media in the summer of 2019, Elton posted about his journey to sobriety.

Elton wrote: “29 years ago today, I was a broken man.

“I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: ‘I need help’.

“Thank-you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful.”
