Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek Draper’s condition, revealing he has opened his eyes for the first time since he was taken out of a medically induced coma last month.
The former political lobbyist contracted coronavirus in March, and still remains in a critical condition in intensive care.
Speaking to Hello! Magazine, the Good Morning Britain host opened up about Derek’s coronavirus battle and revealed both the family and NHS staff are doing all they can with helping him to recover.
“I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say: ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes,” she began.

“We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Kate explained she will be heading back to work on Good Morning Britain as well as her slot on Smooth Radio to help create a send of routine for both herself and two children, Billy and Darcy.
“The doctors have been urging me not to put my life on pause,” she said.
“They’ve told me that I need to go back to work and create a routine in our lives again.
“The children and Derek are all I’ve thought about and they’re the most important people in my life, but I must create structure and normality for the children, to clean the bath, put the plates in the dishwasher, and tidy the house.
Derek is now free of the virus, but Kate admitted there’s a long road ahead in terms of recovery.

She added: “But the doctors have warned that his condition could persist for years so I have to get on with life whilst we are waiting for him to get better.
“Billy starts secondary school in September, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.”
Discussing her children, Kate explained how she wants to “make them feel that the light hasn’t gone out of their lives, that there’s hope for the future”.
