Adele has promised that her new album 30 will explain her divorce to her nine year old son once he’s older. Now she has given fans their first proper taste of new Adele music in six years.
Lead single Easy On Me was released at midnight on Thursday 14 October.
299,000 people watched the video debut live on YouTube, and within five hours it over nine million views on YouTube and the song had topped the iTunes chart in 20 countries.
Easy On Me is a no-frills piano ballad which sees Adele explaining her decision to walk away from her marriage in 2019, while asking her son and ex-husband for understanding.
“I changed who I was to put you both first,” she sings, “but now I give up”.
The music video is directed by Xavier Dolan and it transitions from black and white to full colour at a key emotional moment.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “We will be listening to “Easy on Me” all weekend.”
“Absolute masterpiece. Everyone had such huge expectations but you’ve surpassed them yet again. Thank you for this incredible gift,” said another.
A third fan gushed: “She just gets better and better every time. WHAT A LEGEND.”
A fourth added: “Why’ve I put Adele on this morning currently crying my eyes out for absolutely no reason.”
A fifth agreed: “Okay crying because of the new Adele song.”
Adele dated charity CEO Simon Konecki, 47, for seven years and they were married for two before separating.
Their divorce was officially finalised in March this year.
Music critics have raved about Easy On Me. The BBC’ s Mark Savage said: “Adele’s voice is full of regret, but also resolve.” He also said it “sends shivers down your spine.”
Meanwhile, Radio 2’s Jo Whiley has heard a handful of songs from the new album. She revealed: “There’s one that I listened to and it just made me feel incredibly sad.”
Jo added: “She really does pour her heart out and her voice, I think, has never sounded better.
“I was really surprised by the heights that she reaches – and the power and the resonance within her voice is amazing.”
