Amy Winehouse had troubles with her sexuality for a long time, according to her apparent former female lover and best friend, Catriona Gourlay.
The iconic Valerie singer, who tragically died at the age of 27 in 2011, was close friends with Catriona who has now claimed that the two actually shared a passionate romantic relationship with each other for a number of years.
Catriona, Amy’s former flat mate, claimed that the relationship between the two best friends left Amy feeling “confused” about her sexuality for a long time, but that the pair “loved each other”.
It comes after Amy’s pal revealed all about the singer in a brand new BBC Two documentary called Reclaiming Amy – an intimate telling of Amy’s life led by her friends and family which marks the 10 year anniversary of Amy’s passing.

Discussing her and Amy’s relationship in the documentary, Catriona explains that they had a unique friendship which rapidly grew into a sexual bond – and that Amy had told her she was the “most beautiful girl” she had ever seen.
Catriona said: “When I was 19/20, I’d already been in a long-term relationship with a girl at this point, so I knew who I was.
“Amy used to write notes while I was sleeping, ‘You were the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,’ and ‘How can you look as beautiful asleep as you do awake?”
Catriona continued: “Our relationship was so unique, undefined, we just loved each other very much and what I took from it, knowing her, is that she was confused about what it made her.”
“When you have something that is so undefined for years, it’s hard because it’s the thing that I think is so fundamental in understanding her and the things that did trouble her.”
Catriona also recalled the time soul songstress Amy had previously joked about her sexuality during an interview, when she alleged that she became attracted to women after she drank.

Amy had quipped: “I am not a lesbian until I’ve had four sambucas.”
Catriona went on: “Perhaps people don’t realise that there were other relationships in her life where someone really did love her and care about her and would have done anything in her power to make her happy.”
However, the talented singer sadly passed away from alcohol poisoning on July 23 in 2011 following her nightmare battles with substance abuse and mental illness.

Reclaiming Amy is primarily told from the perspective of her mother Janis and her dad Mitch, and the aim of the film is to reveal the truth about the British music icon and ‘reclaim’ Amy’s incredible story.
Janis said: “I don’t feel the world knew the true Amy, the one that I brought up, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy.”
Daily Star has reached out to representatives of Amy’s family for comment.
Reclaiming Amy airs on Friday 23 July at 9pm on BBC Two.
