Dancing On Ice professional Hamish Gaman cut from line up weeks before training

Dancing On Ice’s professional skater Hamish Gaman has been axed from the show’s line-up in an attempt by producers to “freshen things up”.

The star admitted he was “confused” by the decision and “struggling” to come to terms with it.

In a statement released to his Twitter page, Hamish wrote: “Hi everyone. I’m sad to confirm that I’m not returning to Dancing On Ice this year.

“The producers told me that they weren’t bringing me back because they want to freshen up the lineup.

“I was completely surprised by their decision and I’ve been left confused and struggling to make sense of everything that’s happened.”

He went on to add: “Vanessa [Bauer] and I are still skating partners and I’m devastated that we won’t be skating together on the show anymore.

“Thank you for all your love and support during my time on the show. I’m going to miss skating for you,” he concluded.

Fans were understandably furious with the decision to axe Hamish from the programme, with one tweeting in response: “Worst mistake ever […] to get rid of one of their best skaters/dancers is what will make me not bother with it this time!”

“Oh gosh Hamish, I’m sorry, that’s gutting – a really poor choice from ITV,” someone else said.

Another fan chimed in: “Absolutely ludicrous decision for the show to get rid of you Hamish, especially after all you went through before.

“Gonna miss seeing you on the ice, maybe you should take up a new hobby and go dancing on Strictly instead!”

Hamish originally joined the professional line-up of Dancing On Ice back in 2018, skating with Olympic athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton in his first series.

For series 11, Hamish was partnered with X Factor star Saara Aalto.

Hamish was then forced to withdraw from the show after suffering mental health issues, admitting: “The past three-and-a-half months have been the worst of my life, and I’m struggling.

“It might look like things have been calming down, but they aren’t.”

He made headlines for his apparent feud with skating partner Caprice Bourret – though Hamish claimed unnamed sources were feeding “untrue” stories to the press.

2021’s series also saw Hamish withdraw from the competition after suffering an injury to his finger while partnered up with Coronation Street star Faye Brooks.

Posting to Twitter, Hamish wrote: “I’m heartbroken that I’ll no longer be skating with @faye_brookes on @dancingonice.

“I’m so grateful that I don’t need any surgery on my finger, but if I stay in the show I could have an accident and make my injury much worse (it is series 13).”
