Love Island winner Amber Gill has swapped boys for birds – and become a twitcher!
The Geordie star had to swot up on our feathered friends for a new telly show and now reckons she’s “obsessed”.
Amber says: “I’ve actually turned into a proper twitcher now, I’m obsessed! I love watching them.
“I used to think: ‘Oh, that’s such an older person kind of interest’, but I love birds now. Anywhere I am, I proper look at them and take videos on my phone.
“I know quite a few after learning all about them on this show. So I can point different ones out, which is pretty cool.”
It’s no wonder Amber prefers gulls to guys and doves to dates.
While she was in the villa in summer 2019, she was embroiled in a love triangle that saw firefighter Michael Griffiths ditch her for Casa Amor entry Joanna Chimonides.
Amber then got together with Irish rugby star Greg O’Shea 12 days before the end. They won but only lasted 39 days on the outside.
In January this year, she revealed she was dating a mystery man but has claimed fellas are intimidated by her.
Amber is also keen to prove she’s no bird brain – which is why she signed up to new Channel 4 series Can I Improve My Memory? which starts on Thursday.
It teaches celebrities techniques to help them learn different subjects which they are tested on after a week of revising. The loser of the quiz is then sent home until a winner is crowned.
Amber reckons Love Island stars are too easily written off as dimwitted and wanted to show she’s got brainpower.
“Being off Love Island, you get this perception that you’re not smart,” she says.
“It’s like you can’t have an opinion on anything because: ‘Oh, you went on Love Island. All you did was walk around in a bikini’.
“There’s this perception that we’re just a bunch of airheads and that’s not actually true.
“So I was like: ‘You know what? I’m going to do this because I want to prove to people that I am actually quite smart!’
“Hopefully people will see there’s more to me than they think. I think that you can tell throughout the show that I’m not just some silly girl.”
The 23-year-old has already made a success out of her Love Island win.
She signed a £1million deal with fashion firm Misspap after leaving the villa, is penning a Mills & Boon romance novel to be released next summer and has launched her own fitness plan.
She admits she was a rebel and didn’t knuckle down at school.
“I was smart in school but I didn’t want to do all of the work,” says Amber.
“I was a bit of a rebel. I liked breaking rules and I didn’t really pay attention.
“I wish I had paid attention because I think I could have done so much better. It doesn’t matter now, but doing this show I showed myself that I can learn a crazy amount of information in a short space of time.”
Amber stars on Can I Improve My Memory? alongside former boxer Chris Eubank, ex-Strictly judge Len Goodman, Naked Attraction star Anna Richardson and former EastEnder Nina Wadia. Sandi Toksvig is quizmaster.
The famous faces learn niche facts about all kinds of general knowledge subjects, but there was one that didn’t impress Amber. She says: “Mick Jagger, I didn’t enjoy that topic.
“I’m pretty sure somebody had Martin Luther King, somebody else had Winston Churchill, like really interesting and I got Mick Jagger.”
Amber adds: “The rock star’s not for me, it’s all about the birds!”
The celebrities also tackle that common memory demon – names and faces.
Amber says: “Names is a really bad one for me. I don’t know what it is but I can’t put a name to a face.
“I might have spoken to the person plenty of times but can’t remember their name and it’s too late to ask, it’s awkward.
“I just used to be so embarrassed that I couldn’t remember what people were called.”
Amber, who is using techniques she learned on the show to help her learn Spanish, now reckons she’d be a great addition to a pub quiz team.

“It’s always good to have knowledge about languages, birds, or Mick Jagger.
“It was a nice distraction from what was going on in the world, and the fact I wasn’t doing what I usually would get up to.”
