Paul Sinha forced to apologise after he calls The Chase player 'quiz charlatan'

Chaser Paul Sinha, also known as The Sinnerman, made an unexpected apology to one contestant during today’s edition of The Chase, after he realised he’d mistakenly thought he could be a “quiz charlatan”.

Theatre actor and former film festival producer Ben, from Yorkshire, was the fourth player on the ITV game show today.

In his quick-fire round, Ben struggled a bit but came to the table with a respectable £5,000.

Making another worrisome move, Ben took the minus offer from the Chaser, and shaved off player one Vera’s prize fund with a minus £2,000.

Despite taking the easy route, unfortunately, player four didn’t seem to be showing his best ability as he made some more guesses and just about managed to scrape through back to the panel.

“I’ll be honest here I think Ben’s a guesser and I think he’s a bit of a quiz charlatan,” Paul said bluntly.

“I think Vera could be a lot better than she’s shown so far, but Ben’s an intelligent man so he could have the knowledge.”

But after an excellent final chase that saw Ben and 52-year-old housewife Vera rack up 18 correct answers, the Sinnerman was forced to eat his words.

“Never seen anything quite like that,” presenter Bradley Walsh initiated.

Nodding, Paul went on sheepishly: “First of all Ben I owe you an apology there’s absolutely no doubt about that.

“I underestimated your quizzing ability by a country mile. I now make you favourite because of the difficulty of the questions.”

Despite Paul’s uncharacteristic turnaround, he still managed to beat the team with a nail-biting four seconds to go.

While Vera and Ben were clearly disappointed, the Sinnerman was pleased he managed to pull it back in the end.

“Luckily at the crucial stages I did it,” he said smugly.

The Chaser also joked that the reason he hadn’t known a question about children’s books Mr Men was that he “didn’t have a childhood” and had his head in encyclopaedias.

“There’s a lot that went completely over my head,” he laughed.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
