Piers Morgan revealed his true thoughts on broadcasting veteran Andrew Marr as he stepped down from his flagship BBC programme.
Andrew Marr hosted the final episode of his Sunday morning show – The Andrew Marr Show – after an impressive run of 17 years on Sunday (December 19).
Former Good Morning Britain anchor Piers took to Instagram to pay tribute to his fellow TV anchor – and he reflected on the “jousts” he’d had with Andrew over the years.
He shared two snaps of him and Andrew on Marr’s show – back when Piers appeared as a guest.
One snap was more serious and showed Andrew asking Piers a question, but the second captured a lighter moment – with Piers bursting out laughing and Andrew grinning in front of him.
Alongside the post, Piers praised Andrew for a “brilliant run”, calling his show “essential viewing”.
He penned: “Congrats on a brilliant run, Andrew Marr – you’ve been essential viewing on Sunday mornings & I always enjoyed our jousts.”
Andrew’s final show on Sunday had special guests including Doctor Who legend David Tennant, and politicians Sadiq Khan and Sajid Javid.
The journalist signed off of his show with a hilarious Anchorman reference, and handed over to Sophie Raworth – who will step in to fill Andrew’s slot in the interim – starting from January 9.
The show will temporarily be renamed Sunday Morning.
That is it. All over,’ Andrew declared as the show came to a close. ‘I have been so lucky and so privileged to share so many Sunday mornings with you. The wonderful Sophie Raworth will be taking over now and then who knows.
“These shows are never just about whose name is on the tin they are also about the fabulous team behind them so as the titles roll, just take a moment today to look at the names of all the people who really make this happen.
“I have been wondering how to close this final show but I can’t do better than quoting my great mentor. You stay classy, San Diego”
Marr announced that he would be leaving the BBC back in November.
He is set to join Global to write and present a range of political shows, and will continue to write for newspapers.
On Twitter, part of his statement read: “Coming to Global gives me a new freedom – to do fast-paced, very regular political journalism on LBC with no filter, in entirely my own voice”
The official Global Twitter account revealed: “@AndrewMarr9 is joining Global in a broadcast exclusive.
‘Andrew will be presenting new shows on @LBC & @ClassicFM, a new weekly podcast on @GlobalPlayer, and will also write a regular column for [LBC website]”.
