The first trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy has dropped, sending fans of the original movie into meltdown.
LeBron James and the cast of Looney Tune will appear in the highly-anticipated movie sequel when it’s released in July this year on HBO Max.
Professional basketball player James, 36, has previously described the movie as “one of the biggest, if not the biggest game” he’s ever played as it comes off the back of the 1996 classic starring Micheal Jordan.
The Lakers legend said: “It’s something Mike created and is his.
“I held that with a lot of responsibility. In my younger days, part of my thinking was Space Jam was so good, how can I top this?”
James added that while he’s expecting fans to compare him and Jordan, he’s not too worried about it.
Despite the sporting star clearly having some reservations about the upcoming movie, Space Jam 2 director Malcolm. D. Lee doesn’t seem as nervous.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lee said: “”Who is going to be the first to get an Oscar [between LeBron James and Michael Jordan]? Let’s have that debate.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy is a better movie than Space Jam.
“If you say theatrical movie, Space Jam is it. LeBron’s got that going for him.”
He added: “Michael Jordan transcended sports. LeBron is arguably in that category.
“Now, there’s probably no LeBron without Jordan, and I’m sure he would admit that. But he’s a once-in-a-generation player.
“I love who LeBron is as a man, as an athlete, as an activist.”
One thing people definitely noticed in the trailer is the changes made to Lola Bunny, which sparked a conversation on social media.
The director added that Lola Bunny has been edited to focus less on her physical attributes and more on the strength of her character.
He explained that a goal was to readjust her “very sexualised” image.
25 years after viewers were first welcomed to the Jam, the Looney Tunes toons are back on the basketball court – and fans can’t wait.
Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “Space Jam 2 looks to be everything I hoped it would be, just a lot of fun. I’m officially excited!”
Another added: “Space Jam 2 looks fun.”
A third person posted: “Space jam 2 trailer gave me chillllls”
While a fourth social media user said: “Space Jam 2 look better than what I imagined.”
The trailer introduces fans to James, a gifted basketball player and struggling father.
