Travis Scott has released a statement on Twitter after eight fans died at his concert on Friday night.
He wrote: “I am absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival”
“Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into this tragic loss of life.”
“I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and the NRG Park for their immediate response and support.”
The tragedy unfolded shortly after 9pm at the Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas.
Eyewitnesses have reported seeing the crowd surge forward, with audience members saying the movement caused people to fall and be trapped underneath.
Reports say Scott stopped several times during his set after seeing fans in distress in the crowd as well as asking security to help.
Footage that has been posted shows fans climbing up onto platforms, pleading with staff for help and pointing to where the tragedy happened.
Scott, 29, was the opening act of the two day music festival.
The Houston Fire Department transported 17 people to hospitals, with 11 of those in cardiac arrest, according to the Daily Mail.
The second day of the event has now been cancelled.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said: “We had at least eight confirmed fatalities tonight and scores of individuals that were injured.
“The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries. People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic.”
He added a cause of death has not yet been given.
He stressed: “I think it’s very important that none of us speculate. Nobody has all the answers tonight. If you don’t have facts, if you don’t have evidence, I’m not going to speak against that. We have hurting families out here.”
Chief Lt Larry Satterwhite from Houston Police was there. He said: “It seems like it happened with just over the course of a few minutes – suddenly we had several people down on the ground experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode. We immediately started doing CPR.”
Houston fire chief Samuel Pena said: “The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries.”
Event organisers stated: “Our hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight – especially those we lost and their loved ones.”
“We are focused on supporting local officials however we can. With that in mind the festival will no longer be held on Saturday.
“As authorities mentioned in their press conference earlier, they are looking into the series of cardiac arrests that took place. If you have any relevant information on this, please each out to @HoustonPolice.
“Thank you to our partners at the Houston Police Department, Fire Department and NRG Park for their response and support.”
