BBC Breakfast star Chris Mason had to go it alone on Sunday’s programme after his co-star Katherine Downes abandoned the set before the programme had finished.
With just ten minutes to go, Chris was left to hold the fort on his own on the red sofa after Katherine, 39, took off to present the news on Sunday Morning.
Addressing Katherine’s early departure Chris explained that his co-star’s hectic schedule had been to blame for her sudden disappearance.
The 41-year-old host explained that Katherine wouldn’t be staying until the end of the show because she had other work commitments – including grabbing a flight to China.
After the sports update, Chris told viewers at home: “This is the point where we say goodbye to Kat who is off to read the news for Sunday Morning.
“And then is heading to the winter Olympics.”
Interjecting, busy Katherine added: “I am, I’ll be on a flight tomorrow morning.
“Off to Beijing so I’ll be speaking to you on BBC Breakfast from China.”
Katherine tearfully tweeted a snap of her with her Breakfast co-hosts before her departure: “Spending Beijing-eve with these gents. And then home for as much time with my babies as I can cram in.
“Busy morning to get through first. We’re gonna need more tea… x”.
Earlier on in the programme, Katherine and Chris got on to the awkward subject of dating which left silence between the co-star’s lingering in the air.
During a section on newspaper articles, Katherine began to read out a quote from someone who had a bugbear for potential love candidates who didn’t use the English language adequately.
Chris argued: “There’s nothing wrong with OMG and lol, my goodness.”
“Good grammar and spelling costs nothing,” insisted Katherine.
Seemingly baffled by the comments, her co-star added: “Online dating is a minefield by all accounts,” which prompted a response that he wasn’t expecting.
“Get on there and sort your profile out Chris – that’s why you’re not getting the dates,” urged Katherine.
There was a brief moment of silence before Chris remarked: “We’ve been stunned to silence by that, we really have.”
BBC Breakfast returns tomorrow on BBC One from 6am.
