Coronation Street fans have predicted that Phil Whittaker (Jamie Kenna) is secretly working against his electoral candidate Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon).
During Wednesday’s instalment of the popular ITV soap, viewers saw Maria excitedly put up the last of her posters around the village ahead of the election to become town councillor.
The brunette beauty was seen posing up a storm outside Victoria Garden as part of a newspaper article less than 24 hours before the big election.
But viewers couldn’t help but suspect the worst when Phil advised the budding politician to keep some of the posters for “keepsakes” hinting that the election may not fall in her favour.
Later on in the show, Maria met up with party members Kirk Sutherland and Phil as they one final drink before they found out the results of the election.
Despite being filled with disappointment at her unlikely chances of winning the position, the pair attempted to make her feel better with some good news.
Phil reassured her: “Look, even if the press polls are looking bad it’s still good news.”
Confused by his comment, Maria asked: “How is this good news? You should be a spin doctor.”
He explained: “Your campaign has worked because planning has been rescinded on the bypass and with Within County have just announced they are going to build their new training ground somewhere else.
“A brownfields site, the old brickworks, thus protecting the green belt causing minimal damage to the environment. They’ve done a press release about it – it’s online.
“Wether County must have seen the writing on the wall and got themselves a back up option with planning permission.”
It was at this point that the hopeful politician excitedly worked out, “even if I lose the election I’ll still have achieved what I set out to!”
But viewers couldn’t help but spot how uncomfortable Phil seemed throughout the exchange as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts online.
One user penned: “I’d say Phil is secretly working for Maria’s competitor! He deliberately must have sabotaged Maria’s campaign #corrie.”
Another argued: “Can’t help thinking there’s something dodgy about Phil #corrie.”
A third suspected: “There’s got to be something wrong with Phil, he’s too nice. Plus he fancies Fix #Corrie.”
