EastEnders' Danny Dyer 'sobbed' after realising ego problem had put him at rock bottom

Danny Dyer has revealed he “sobbed his f***ing heart out” after an ego problem left him at rock bottom.

The EastEnders star, 45, is set to bow out as Mick Carter in a dramatic Christmas storyline.

Ahead of his exit from the BBC One soap, Danny appeared on Jaime Winstone’s Greatest Night Ever podcast where he revealed the pressures of fame had led him “down the wrong path”.

Danny candidly admitted to abusing drugs after feeling “wounded” and “vulnerable”.

Danny said: “Fame never suited me; I was always f***ing gonna be going down the wrong path.

“So, I lost the plot for many years and I was a f***ing lunatic.

“I became a sort of a cartoon character. I got wrapped up in that and I sort of lost who I was, really.”

Opening up about the dark place he found himself in, Danny said fears he would lose his relationship with his three children led him to seek professional help.

After paying for treatment, the actor revealed he had an epiphany of sorts and claimed that what he really needed was an ego check.

He added: “I didn’t want fresh linen. I didn’t want a Priory-type gaff.

“I’m not knocking The Priory. I understand it.

“I needed to be down on a floor, scrubbing [toilets] and just broken down completely, because what I’ve recognised is ego.”

Danny later attributed an ego check and meditative breathing in aiding his recovery

Following his wake-up call and to deal with his stresses, Danny said he began a meditative breathing technique and “sobbed me f***ing heart out” the first time he tried it.

“It took me to a mad place, right,” he said.

And then, when you stop, you are rushing out . . . like this is an intense thing.”

Danny will bow out from EastEnders later this year and already has a Netflix quiz show lined up.
