Telly joker Jack Whitehall has confessed that he nicks as much as he can from hotels – including light bulbs and even the batteries from the TV remote.
The Fresh Meat and Bad Education star said he raids his room on getaways and claimed he can’t stop pinching stuff because he “has definitely been influenced by my mother”.
Jack, 33, said: “My mother’s ability to strip down a hotel room and steal as many of the contents as possible was learnt from the Sensei of such things, her mother, and handed down, generation to generation, and it’s definitely something that I have inherited.
“I even try to rationalise it in my own head – ‘I don’t need these items; I’m lucky enough to be in a position where I could easily afford these things.’
“But the genetic kleptomania takes hold and I stride into the bathroom thinking, ‘If these b******s are going to charge that much for Pringles and make me pay for Wi-Fi, those shower curtain rings are coming with me.’
“And it’s not just the obvious items I will go for. I think outside the box; obviously I take the toiletries, that tiny bottle of shampoo – you never know when you’re going to need to wash one armpit.
“But thanks to my mother’s influence, I’ll take anything. Shower mats, light bulbs, linen, batteries from the television remote. I can’t help it; it’s in my DNA.”
In his new book How to Survive Family Holidays, Jack admitted that he even leaves extra room in his suitcase so that he can bring pilfered hotel gear home with him.
He added: “This brings me neatly to my next piece of advice when packing: make sure you leave plenty of room for stolen hotel items.
“While arriving with a towel is not OK, leaving with one most certainly is.
“It adds an air of devil-may-care highway robbery to even the most humdrum night in an Ibis. Make sure you have reserved space, maybe even an entire spare suitcase, to clear out every item you can from that hotel room.
“There is no shame in paying excess baggage to cover the cost of smuggling home a stolen bath mat or a couple of pillows.

“The other key bit of advice when stealing from a hotel that I have mastered over the years is not to fall into the trap of waiting until the end of the holiday to clear everything.
“Thievery is like any other job of work: you want to get it out of the way, then you can relax and enjoy yourself.
“You don’t want to have to do it in a muck sweat as you depart.”
