BBC Breakfast host jokes Carol Kirkwood ‘pushed co-star in pool’ as he vanishes

BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt had the studio in hysterics on Thursday morning (September 7) after joking that weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood had pushed a news reporter into a swimming pool.

Regular co-host Charlie was joined by Sarah Campbell – filling in for Naga Munchetty – and introduced a segment on climate change amid the current heatwave in the UK.

With September 6 expected to be announced as the warmest September night on record, Sarah then welcomed BBC Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt to discuss extreme weather.

Justin, reporting from the pool in Charlton Lido, South London discussed global warming and carbon emissions, before Sarah introduced Carol for a weather update at the same location.

But with Justin now off screen, Charlie, 61, asked the weather beauty what she had “done with him”.

“I think what’s happened here is that Carol has actually pushed Justin in,” he joked. “Have you pushed him into the water and taken his position? Where is he? What have you done with him?”

Carol laughing, quipped: “He’s going up and down there [the pool] like a basking shark, Charlie!”

She then reassured: “Actually he’s just standing next to me, but he is going in later and we’ll help him.”

Carol, also 61, later took to X, formerly Twitter, to declare that the pool looked “inviting”.

Addressing her 251,000 followers, she wrote: “How inviting does this pool look? At Charlton Lido in east London this morning xxx.”

It prompted one excited fan to respond: “Sure is Carol. So get that leopard skin bikini on and show us how to do it”!
