Bruce Springsteen has opened up on the painful stomach condition that he has compared to a “monster” – and which forced him to cancel and postpone several shows during his latest tour. The Born to Run hitmaker, 74, has been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease, which causes sores to form in the stomach and small intestine.
It can be caused by bacterial infections and causes a burning or gnawing pain in the stomach – along with heartburn or nausea. For Bruce, it’s been bad enough to force him to axe several tour dates.
Speaking on his SiriusXM E Street Radio show From My Home to Yours this week, the superstar introduced himself as “your favourite rock star with a b*tch of a bellyache”, and went on to thank fans for their continued support throughout his ordeal.

He said: “Let me take a moment and thank my fans affected by our postponed shows for their understanding. I am deeply sorry but this belly thing, despite my ability to laugh at it, has been a monster and is still unfortunately rocking my internal world.”

He cancelled all of his 2023 shows from “an abundance of caution”, issuing a statement via Instagram that read: “Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor’s advice.”
Bruce said at the time: “Thanks to all my friends and fans for your good wishes, encouragement and support. I’m on the mend and can’t wait to see you all next year.”

Dates have now been rescheduled for March and April 2024, before picking back up in August in Pittsburgh.
Over the years, the Thunder Road singer has been up front about his health issues, including his throat surgery and mental health battle. In 2013, doctors cut open the star’s vocal cords to repair damaged discs in his neck and alleviate chronic numbness impeding his ability to play guitar. He was unable to sing for three months.

He also revealed he’s battled a series of mental breakdowns, telling Esquire he suffers from “agitated depression”, theorising it could stem from repressed trauma in his childhood.
The star confessed: “We have to watch, in our family. I have to watch my kids, and I’ve been lucky there. It ran in my family going way before my dad.”
