Cher lost millions from hit single Believe as she admits making ‘stupid’ mistake

Pop sensation Cher has revealed that she missed out on millions when she failed to secure a writing credit on her hit song Believe.

The 77-year-old singer explained that one of her biggest regrets was being too “stupid” to ask for her lyrical contribution to the 1998 single that she helped write the lyrics for. Speaking on BBC Radio 2 she told host Vernon Kay: “You can’t even imagine – about 30 people wrote on it. And I wrote it and was so stupid – I didn’t even ask to get a writer’s credit!

“I wrote, ‘I’ve had time to think it through, and maybe I’m too good for you’.” The star explained that her thought process around that line in the song was that “a chick can be upset for one verse but not two, not on one of my songs.”

The If I Could Turn Back Time hitmaker also told fans about how tense it was when she recorded the song and how she stormed out of the studio. She revealed: “The verse was so bad. I couldn’t make it good.

“I got into a big fight with Mark [Taylor, producer], and Mark kept saying, ‘You’ve got to sing it better.’ And finally, I went, ‘If you want it sung better, get somebody else” and I walked out.’”

The next morning the pop star suggested using a “vocoder” but that was shot down with producers insisting that she must sing live. But the song was soon altered thanks to a pitch machine.

She said: “I don’t want people to think of me and Christmas as one with this album. What I wanted to do was make an album that would make people feel happy. I wanted it to be joyous. I just wanted to pick songs that even if it doesn’t go together, it makes you feel better.”
