Cheryl's West End debut delayed as 'strict' security checks cause chaos on opening night

Cheryl’s West End debut was thrown into chaos over security checks.

The Girls Aloud singer is starring in hit play 2:22 A Ghost Story at London’s Lyric Theatre.

At the first show on Saturday (Janaury 21) night, there were strict bag searches at the entrance to the venue.

It meant fans had to queue around the block before they could get in and the start of the show was delayed by 15 minutes.

An audience members said: “There was a massive queue because of the bag checks. The security was really tight.

“It meant people took ages to get into the theatre and the show had to start quite a bit later than it was meant to.”

Cheryl’s performance went down a storm with the crowd.

One fan said: “Cheryl is really impressive. She has had the audience laughing a lot.

“She has a lot of funny one-liners and delivers them well. She’s got great comic timing.”

Cheryl plays a mum called Jenny who is convince her house is haunted.

The role has previously been played by Laura Whitmore, Giovanna Fletcher and Lily Allen.

Cheryl is the latest member of Girls Aloud to star in the West End.

Kimberly Walsh and Nicola Roberts have both had leading roles in the past.

Cheryl is starring in 2:22 A Ghost Story for 14 weeks and is netting a six-figure pay packet.

According to an insider, Cheryl, who rose to fame in 2002 after landing a spot in Girls Aloud on ITV’s Popstars: The Rivals, is earning £1,000 for every show.

An industry booker said: “The deal is £100,000 but will also be linked to ticket sales so if she helps shift around 80% of seats then she’ll be entitled to more money on top of that.”

Former Love Island presenter Laura hailed Cheryl on her news, tweeting: “It’s the best, you’re going to love it!”

Giovanna said: “Whoooop! A fresh Jenny dance. Welcome to the family!”
