Eddie Murphy called star 'dumb motherf***er' as 'off limits' joke sparked 30-year feud

A joke made on the show that launched Eddie Murphy’s career sparked a feud with one of its stars that lasted nearly 30 years.

This notorious spat began on Saturday Night Live, as part of David Spade’s popular recurring segment in which he ridiculed celebrities with over-the-top, snide put-downs, called Hollywood Minute.

On the fateful night, in 1995, Spade had already torn into the likes of Tony Danza and Heather Locklear, when a photo of Murphy appeared, prompting Spade to say: “Look, children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.”

The joke got groans from the SNL audience, and apparently angered Murphy in the process.

According to Spade, come Monday morning, Murphy called the SNL offices and berated him for the joke, yelling: “You dumb motherf**ker! I’m off-limits, don’t you know that? You wouldn’t have a job if it weren’t for me.”

Reportedly, Murphy, who turns 62 today (April 3), stayed away from the show, not even participating in anniversary specials, purely because of this one Spade burn.

Eventually, the two reconciled thanks to the mediation of Chris Rock, and Murphy once again hosted SNL in 2019.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel in 2020, Spade said of the feud: “I just said a joke about him and he wasn’t in the mood for it. He yelled at me and we carried that grudge forever. So, thirty years later he finally hosts SNL and he says it’s still awkward for me and him, I never see the guy…”

Yet Murphy had walked up behind him and said: “Hey man, can I talk to you?” The Nutty Professor actor gave him a hug and added, ‘Hey this is stupid’, as they buried the hatchet.

Spade added: “So we talked about SNL and some other stuff for a while. Super cool dude, I just felt bad I was a little thorn in his side for all that time, but we’re all good now.”
