Piers and Sharon spoke of the TV legend on the show as the former GMB star declared the he has “a lot” to be grateful to Paul for.
He said: “A story not many people know, I finished newspapers rather suddenly and Simon Cowell came up with this idea for a talent show, he wanted to call it ‘Got Talent’.”
Piers explained how Simon went to ITV with the pitch and they had suggested to centre it around Paul O’Grady, calling the show Paul O’Grady’s Got Talent.
He added: “We all went down to do a pilot, me Simon Cowell and Fern Britton, it was a huge success. The contestants were the audience and it was a great hit!”
But things soon took a quick turn, as Piers said: “At the last minute Paul fell out spectacularly with ITV – you and I of course would never behave like this – and had a massive falling out with them.
“He called them a bunch of petty tyrants and said, ‘I’d rather be sweeping the streets than work for ITV’, which brought an abrupt end to my dream and the show.”
However Piers explained that Simon then sold the rights to American network NBC who branded it America’s Got Talent.
He said: “I went on that, you [Sharon] then joined it after a season, number one show in America and who knows? That may have never happened if Paul hadn’t had a strop with ITV and walked off.”
Piers ended his note saying: “He was a great talent and will be greatly missed I think,” while Sharon added that Paul is “irreplaceable”.
She added: “There’s nobody that could walk in his shoes, he was just an incredible human being.”
Piers praised Paul for how he could react to things going wrong, adding that he would find it “hilarious” if a mistake was made during a show.
He ended the segment branding Paul a “real talent”.
Tributes have since flooded in for Paul following his untimely death, the cause of which remains unknown at this time.
