Despite some agitated viewers, most fans went wild for the live rendition of the hit track, with one finding it “spectacular”.
“I don’t understand the hate as I thought @samsmith & @kimpetras performance @BRITs was on fire!” they tweeted.
“The choreography, the costumes, the set design etc were all excellent and of such a high standard, just like the music video & i found it all very sexy & wow… it was spectacular!”
Another put: “Oh I watched Sam Smith’s performance at the brits and they slayed SOOOO hard!!!!”
“I’m shocked every time I hear Sam Smith sing their voice is so powerful, I just watched their BRITs performance and wow flawless!” a third tweeted.
Sam Smith initially made headlines for their “ridiculous” outfit on the red carpet, consisting of huge, oversized shoulder pads and ballooned trousers in a black latex material.
They paired the outlandish outfit with sky-high platform heeled boots.
While viewers fumed over their outfit and performance, Sam Smith had their own “malfunctions” on stage of their £500k set.
A source told The Sun: “Sam’s performance might have appeared seamless but behind-the-scenes it was a nightmare. The whole set was built and ready to go but then a malfunction meant it had to be pulled off.”
“Stormzy was moved forward and Sam was told there was a possibility their performance might be pulled altogether,” they added. “Sam was understandably furious and it was pretty tense backstage.”
