The vibes were a bit nippy on the BBC Breakfast set this weekend as Rachel Burden wasn’t having any of co-presenter Charlie Stayt’s banter, leading to a frosty exchange.
Chatting about Aerosmith’s decision to hang up their touring boots after nearly 50 years due to frontman Steven Tyler’s health woes, Rachel announced during a throwback clip: “Aerosmith have retired from touring after almost 50 years.”
“The group said their singer Steven Tyler’s voice couldn’t recover because of damaged vocal cords, and despite the best medical team, 76-year-old Tyler had made the difficult but necessary decision. 76! I had no idea he was that age.”
Once the recorded segment came to a close, Charlie turned to Rachel to quiz her: “Did I hear you singing along then, Rachel? Did I hear that? I think I heard that.”
Rachel was understandably terse, just replying: “Erm. Mumbling along. Yeah…” sensing the odd vibe, Charlie swiftly shifted gears and looked towards weather presenter Sarah Keith-Lucas, tossing the question: “Sarah, were you singing along?”, reports the Express.
In contrast to Rachel’s mood, Sarah was all cheer, saying: “I mean, there might have been a bit of gentle swaying going on there!” Which had Charlie reacting: “Oh look at that!” while Rachel chimed in with a joke: “Get your lighter out!”
The band has hung up their mics with a heartfelt message, sharing: “It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.”
“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.”
“Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision as a band of brothers to retire from the touring stage.”
They concluded the statement with appreciation: “We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time. Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible. A final thank you to you the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true.”
