Manchester United’s Christmas party once went royally off the rails when goalkeeper Roy Carroll lost his cool.
Carroll, who turned 47 this week, was seemingly a quiet member of the squad until one winter when he clashed with Dev from Coronation Street at the annual event, according to fellow shot stopper and former team-mate Luke Steele.
He sensationally claimed he saw Carroll in a scrap with actor Jimmi Harkishin, who has played Dev Alahan on the hit ITV soap since 1999. Speaking on the Undr The Cosh Podcast in November 2020, Steele said: “I remember Dev off Coronation Street, him and Roy Carroll going at it. Which is the two most random characters.

“I was steaming just trying to get the girls and I remember looking and thinking, ‘ah, Roy Carroll’s having a fight with Dev’. You blink and you miss something.” Steele went on to explain his fellow goalkeeper was a decent bloke, though.
He added: “He [Carroll] liked a drink and all the rest of it, really good guy.” The 40-year-old confessed he had no idea why the pair had got into a fight. And he confessed that he did not get involved in trying to break up the scuffle.
Carroll spent four years at United after joining from Wigan Athletic in 2001 and went on to make 72 appearances for the club before leaving for West Ham United. During his time at the club, he competed with the likes of Fabien Barthez and Tim Howard for the number one jersey and also won the Premier League and the FA Cup with the Red Devils.
But he is perhaps best known for the “goal that never was” against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2005. A speculative shot from the half-way line by Pedro Mendes was dropped by Carroll, well behind his goal-line, then scooped back into play. But in one of the most infamous blunders in top flight history, the referee and linesmen failed to give the goal.
As for Steele, he never made a first team appearance for United after arriving from Peterborough United in 2001 and left the club after five years to join West Bromwich Albion. He is now joint manager of National League North side Peterborough Sports.
In addition to playing Dev Alahan on Corrie, Harkishin has also appeared in Casualty, The Bill and Jonathan Creek during his acting career, which has spanned over three decades.
