Iconic show set to return to TV after 20 years with GMB star tipped to host

One of the most iconic British TV shows is set for a revival as television bosses eye up bringing it back to the airwaves.

Producers at several channels are now in talks with a number of people to resurrect the beloved programme This is Your Life. It has been 20 years since the last edition of the show hit our screens, but now a revival is being toyed with, according to insiders.

The show was first televised back in 1955 in one of the first entertainment programmes to be established at the beginning of the TV age. This is Your Life was a biographical TV show which featured a celebrity guest as a person of honour, looking back at their life in the limelight.

One of the most defining elements of the show comes at the end of the show when the celebrity is gifted a large red book with the story of their life. It officially came to an end as a normal series in 2003, with a number of specials being aired until 2007.

During the show’s initial run, the programme was the hosted by three men. However, now it is being speculated that a woman will be behind the helm, with names including Good Morning Britain stars Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway being thrown into the ring.

A source for the broadcaster said: “There is a reason This Is Your Life aired for so many years – as a format, it is perfect. It’s warm, entertaining and interesting plus is fairly affordable to make, which of course helps.

“Since it last ran properly in 2003 many more celebrities are now worthy of the big, red book treatment,” the insider added. “It was always such an honour to appear, bosses are confident a whole new generation of stars will embrace a surprise visit from the team.”

The source also said that talks were underway to see if anyone would want to host the show, and revealed that filming will be set to star later this year. They added that Reid, 53, or BBC News presenter Fiona Bruce, 59, would be seen as a “safe pair of hands” to bring in viewers.

Throughout the years, This is Your Life has had a string of famous faces as the show honoured their life’s work. A number of well-known names have been surprised, including comedian Ronnie Barker and actor Dudley Moore.

Former Pointless host Richard Osman has also been given the low down on the plans to bring the iconic show back again. Speaking on his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, he revealed: “I got a message from a very big name TV presenter saying they’d just been offered a reboot of This Is Your Life.”

Over the course of its run, the show has alternated between both the BBC and ITV. Currently, no channel has stated they will be picking the show up, but the insider added that discussions were “ongoing”.

This is not the first time that the programme was rumoured to return in recent times, as the show was tipped to come back in 2018. The show was set to be hosted by Jonathan Ross, but the reboot never made it to air.
